Alice ADSL and VOIP

Hi,

We have just recently moved from the UK to Piedmont, near Asti, because I work in Torino – we absolutely love Italy!

We have our ADSL via Alice.it, plus a VIOP phone.
The children have internet on their PC’s in their bedrooms upstairs, which have wireless USB receivers which work great with my Netgear wireless router.

Unfortunately, the router Alice supplied me is a non-wireless model, and have only two network cable connections, one for the main PC, and the other for the VOIP phone.

Because of this, I changed the router back to the much better netgear wireless router, but I am unsure if the VOIP phone is linked to the Alice-branded router!

Can I still use the Alice VOIP phone even though it is plugged into the Netgear router? (I know a lot about PC’s, but know nothing about how VOIP works!)

Unfortunately Alice's voip works "easily" only with Alice's router.
It seems to me that it is possible to have Alice's voip with others routers,
for this a Google search could surely help.
If your main problem is to have a wireless connection and voip, either you can ask Telecom (i.e. Alice 187) for a wireless router (they surely have), or simply you can use your netgear routers for adsl and wireless and skipe or another voip program and provider.

I shall do a Google - trouble is, because the Alice branded items are specific to Italy, everything is written in Italian only. (Although I fully accept this is my problem, I should learn to speak the native language quicker, as I am now living here, for good!)

I have the Netgear router linked physically to the voip phone and main PC (a HTPC with an E6750 and 8800 GTX hooked up to a 50” plasma TV – Bioshock looks stunning!), the other PC’s are linked wirelessly.

As I said, I shall do a search later..

Hi Chris,

I find myself in the same boat as you having just moved to Piacenza and trying to get to grips with the lingo as quickly as possible!
I have just subscribed to Alice 7Mega ADSL and have a Netgear DG834N Modem/Router but I can't get the damn thing to configure properly. Could you let me know what settings you have on the router setup pages please?
