Lenovo L220x 22", PVA panel

"Finally", many screen experts are saying. The 22 inch will longer be reserved to TN technology, with its panels being juggled from one manufacturer to another, its poor inferior viewing angles, etc. Lenovo has just unveiled the L220x, the first non TN 22 inch, wide gamut (!) and Full HD! Its panel can now display 1920 x 1200 points instead of the usual 1680 x 1050.



So what is it if it’s not a TN ? Lenevo isn’t saying, however they do reveal certain characteristics:
- it covers 92% of the NTSC gamut,
- VGA + DVI (HDCP)
- response time : 6 ms
- brightness : 300 cd/m²,
- contrast of 1000:1
- integrated 4 port USB hub
- rotating base, vertically adjustible and pivotable

A contrast ratio of 1000:1 is usually a characteristic of PVA panels, which generally do well in depth of black. The chances that it is indeed this type of technology are even stronger given the response time of 6 ms, the usual figure given in this area for a panel of this type. Samsung has not said it produces a panel matching these characteristics, but either way neither LP-Philips (IPS), AU Optronics or CMO (MVA) have boasted of such a feat.

The Lenovo L220x will arrive in November in the U.S. for an announced price of $550.

This brings us to the second part concerning this news: Is this really of interest? It’s not sure. Let’s take the symbolic monitor, the Dell 2407WFP-HC, which is offered for the « on sale » price in the USA (either way this is the way this company functions) of 569 $. This is today and not in November. Nothing indicates that in two months it won’t be cheaper and we could even assume the opposite. So what then is the interest of the Lenovo 22 inch? The same price for smaller and with a tighter pitch ? For those that don’t have 20/20 vision, the font and icon sizes wil have to be increased with such a screen. In addition, and not to disadvantage Lenovo, but for an equal price a choice between this brand and Dell may often result in the latter. Especially if we add all the pluses like an integrated card player for Dell.

Unless it revises its price from here to Novemember, the L220x could be « still born ». We appreciate the change in technology, but it comes a little too late. Coming out with such a screen before summer would have been better but the current climate is different with the 24 inch being on the heels of the 22 in terms of prices.
