Nell’ultimo quadrimestre dell’anno è prevista la vendita dei laptop Lenovo con sistema operativo preinstallato Linux. Il tutto nasce da un accordo con Novell, e la distribuzione che verrà installata sarà SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (SLED); la stessa Novell si occuperà di mantenere gli aggiornamenti al software.
Si tratta, a differenza della partnership Dell/Ubuntu, questa di Lenovo/Novell è dedicata alle imprese.
E’ sempre un altro passo in avanti per Linux, anche se con Novel…

Lenovo, Novell partner to offer Linux on the ThinkPad

ThinkPad customers will soon have a new configuration option, as Lenovo and Novell have announced that the popular laptops will begin shipping with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (SLED) preinstalled. Although the ThinkPad has been certified for Linux for some time, this marks the first time Lenovo will ship a laptop with Linux preinstalled—while providing both hardware and OS support. Novell will provide software updates directly to ThinkPad owners, however.

Lenovo says that the decision to offer Linux on its laptops comes as the result of pressure from enterprise customers. "We have seen more customers utilizing and requesting open source notebook solutions in education, government, and the enterprise since our ThinkPad T60p Linux announcement, and today's announcement expands upon our efforts by offering customers more Linux options," said Lenovo VP Sam Dusi in a statement.

SUSE will be available on T-series ThinkPads (Lenovo's business-class notebooks) beginning in the fourth quarter. Aside from the choice of operating system, the SUSE ThinkPads should be in all respects identical to their Windows-running brethren.

The Linux users at the Orbiting HQ report that Linux runs smoothly on the T60 but that hardware support isn't quite mature on the T61 as of now. This should change in the months leading up to the official launch of the Linux ThinkPads as Novell and Lenovo work together to get support up to snuff.

Lenovo's announcement makes the company the second major hardware maker to sell laptops with Linux preinstalled and fully supported. After being inundated by requests via its IdeaStorm user-feedback site, Dell decided to begin offering Ubuntu Linux 7.04 on a handful of machines, including an Inspiron laptop.

Unlike Dell, which has targeted its Linux offering primarily at the enthusiast community, Lenovo's SLED laptops are targeted at the enterprise. Whether they are running Ubuntu, SLED, or some other distribution, the availability of Linux preinstallation from mainstream vendors increases the visibility of the operating system and gives component makers an incentive to provide better Linux drivers and hardware support. If Lenovo is willing to collaborate with the Linux development community to improve the Linux laptop user experience, it will be a big win for all Linux users, not just the ones who buy laptops from Lenovo.
