Ma si sono tutti bevuti il cervello?
LG Sits Down at Microsoft's Linux Table
LG Electronics is just the latest technology company that has taken up a seat at Microsoft's Linux round table, where some are more equal than others and there are no intellectual property issues. LG had to agree to a broad patent-licensing partnership with Microsoft, as the cost for the Redmond Company's IP heaven. Microsoft has emphasized from the get go that patent cross-license agreement with LG covers not only intellectual property associated with hardware and software products but also Linux. "This agreement and our good relationship with Microsoft enable LGE to provide improved telecommunications solutions to our customers," said Jeong Hwan Lee, executive vice president of the Intellectual Property Center at LGE. "We believe that the license arrangement with Microsoft provides appropriate recognition of the value of LGE’s computer system-related patents, which includes patents directed to computer architecture utilized in game consoles and other products. We believe in the importance of respecting the IP rights of others and that patent collaboration and protection is a best business practice the whole industry should be engaged in." In the last year, Microsoft has increased the crowd on its Linux-Windows interoperability and intellectual property wagon to healthy proportions with the addition of such names as: Fuji Xerox NEC, Nortel Networks, Novell, Samsung and Seiko Epson. The Redmond Company also went on the offensive claiming that open source and free software, including Linux, infringes on a wide array of its patents. It is clear that Microsoft's strategy is paying off, as more and more companies seek a shelter from potential patent infringement issues. "This agreement is another example of how Microsoft is continuing to build bridges with others in the industry through intellectual property licensing," said Horacio Gutierrez, vice president, Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft. "We are pleased to be working with an industry leader and partner like LGE to meet our mutual business goals and customer needs.

"Kevin, What a load of self serving rubbish. First Linux won't benefit from this agreement in any way shape or form. Linspire might, provided Microsoft doesn't destroy your company, as they have so many other companies in the past, or the exclusionary patent protection they and you are offering doesn't fall foul of the GLP3 final, but Linux as a community, as a collection of Free and Open software, won't. If Microsoft were truely serious about connectivity, they need only use the same open standards as the Linux developers use, or provide their standards with a free license for anyone to use. This deal, while it may well, from your point of view, be about connectivity, it most definitely is not from Microsoft's. Instead it's about revenue streams and more importantly control. Control of their proprietary standards, not for the good of their customers or yours, Control of their proprietary standards not for the good of Linux or to make a better Linux, or even to make a better Linspire. Control for the benefit of Microsoft and their cash cows Windows OS and Microsoft Office and their "Open" XML document format. In your smarmy self serving open letter, you have managed to insult every Free and Open Source developer that has spent any time at all trying to make Linux better. You have insulted every FOSS developer who has contributed hours to trying to make Linux and Microsoft Windows connect - who has had to reverse engineer every road block Microsoft has placed in their way. The problem has never ever been the Linux developers or the Linux community shunning Microsoft. At every turn Linux developers have attempted to reach out to Microsoft, to gain the necessary information needed to make interoperability possible, and it has always been Microsoft who have shunned us. Indeed even when via reverse engineering a Microsoft connectivity protocol is finally understood, rather than work with the FOSS developers, Microsoft has made changes so that Linux will no longer connect properly to Windows. There is one thing we can be certain of the agreement you have signed with Microsoft has nothing to do with making GNU/Linux better." Ho grassettato le parti piu importanti...

NOTIZIE FRESCHE
Dal Blog ufficiale di M.Shuttlework (Ubuntu): Mark Shuttleworth says: Neither Canonical nor the Ubuntu project have any interest in signing an agreement with Microsoft on the back of the threat of unspecified patents. We have consistently (but politely ) declined to pursue those conversations with Microsoft, in the absence of any details of the alleged patent infringements. Speaking for myself, I welcome Microsoft’s openness to the idea of improving interoperability between free software components such as OpenOffice and Microsoft Office, and believe that Microsoft’s customers, many of whom are now also Linux users, will appreciate Microsoft’s efforts in that regard. I have substantial reservations about the quality of the specification for Microsoft’s OpenXML document formats and do not believe that Microsoft will limit it’s own Office implementation to that specification, which makes the specification largely meaningless as a standard. A specification which Microsoft won’t certify as being accurate as a representation of Office 12’s behavior, and will not commit to keeping up to date in advance of future revisions to MS Office, is not a credible standard. Instead of OpenXML, I would urge Microsoft to join the ODF working group. They are already a member of OASIS, I believe. Their participation in ODF would be genuine engagement with an open standards process. Microsoft would benefit from the innovation that comes from clean, well written standards that are widely implemented. They would have a large share of a larger market. After many years of participating in the free software community I know that neither I nor any other free software programmer has any desire to infringe on any intellectual property (trademark, copyright or patent) of any other person or company. Many of us are motivated precisely to ensure that we work on platforms which DON’T cross that line. So it is somewhat offensive to be threatened with an allegation of an IP infringement. I’m sure Microsoft doesn’t realise that its actions are being received in that light, otherwise they wouldn’t continue. But it is getting rather tiresome. I would be very happy to see the details of any alleged patent infringement so that we can engage with Microsoft more constructively on the subject. Riposa in pace Linspire

E ci stanno cascando Novell, Xandros e ora Linspire.
