Rumors and Preliminary Information about Radeon R600

Launch date

* R600 was reported to launch between the end of January 2007 to end of Q1 2007. [1] [2].
* R600 silicon revision A12 (GDDR3 version) [3] and A13 (GDDR4 version) [4] is reportedly taped-out. [5]
* R600 has undergone several delays and revisions for technical reasons, such as serious bugs inside the GPU itself, PCB re-design processes (see here), and so on. [6] [7]

Miscellaneous board specifications

Coolers

* Designed "from the ground up" with compatibility for Windows Vista and DirectX 10, according to sources at ATI. However there will also be support for Linux using OpenGL and Windows XP with DirectX 9.

Power consumption

* R600 is being re-designed to make the PCB shorter for improved cooling, and compliance with the new PCI-SIG graphics spec of delivering 225/300W power to high-end graphics cards. The redesign will also address providing a new 8 pin connector [18] for additional power on top of the current 6-pin connector. [19]
* Power consumption range from 130W to 265W [citation needed]. This increase in power consumption will make for higher-wattage Power Supply Units and/or the addition of internal, secondary PSUs solely for powering the GPUs. [20]

Availability

* The first batch of R600 GPUs, which are clocked lower, are being shipped to game developers and special customers. [21]
* Two graphics cards equipped with the R600 GPU core and a total of 1 GB of memory (of unknown version of GDDR) have been spotted in a demo in CES 2007. [22]

Variants

* There are 2 versions of R600 graphics card lineup, codenamed as "Pele" (GDDR4 version) and "UFO" (GDDR3 version, reportedly canceled [23], and yet reported to have brought back to the official roadmap in January 2007 [10]). [7]

GPGPU products

* One GPGPU product under the AMD Stream processor brand, based on the R600 core is also being developed, with the same memory configuration as R600 based graphic cards. [23] It is rumored to be named as "AMD Stream Processor 2". [citation needed]

* AMD/ATI have released "Close to Metal" [34] or CTM, a fully open thin hardware interface aimed at utilizing the GPGPU concept that opens the GPU architecture to the developer. This low level access to the GPU hardware in theory can allow two to ten times speed up over earlier higher level programming interfaces. The R600 features integer data types which are important for the calculations. CTM back ends for High-level programming languages, and support existing Shading languages and stream processing languages such as Brook and Sh are already under development.

Non credo, l'NDA scade molto piu' in la imho nel momento in cui dopo aver fatto tutti i test possibili e immaginabili gli editori avranno via libera a rilasciare le recensioni.
