Installazione driver audio ALSA su Ubuntu 6.10

Salve a tutti.

Sono un nuovissimo utente che si affaccia al Linux, e che ha deciso di iniziare con la distro Ubuntu 6.10.
Mi trovo abbastanza bene, il sistema Debian è molto stabile, così come il file system che ho scelto (l'ext3, ndr).
L'unica cosa che mi manca (per ora) è l'audio: non riesco ad installare i driver.
Posseggo una E-MU 0404 interna. L'ho comprata per produrre e avere così un po' più di potenza di calcolo, ma sul Linux vorrei soltanto ascoltare gli mp3 o guardarmi i film in DVD. Niente di esoso.
Dato che la E-MU non crea driver per Linux ho scaricato il pacchetto ALSA 1.0.9, dopo aver letto che come driver generico va più che bene. Da Synaptic ho scaricato anche tutte le librerie necessarie legate con il gstreamer (oltre al gstreamer stesso, lo 0.8.7). Il problema sorge nell'installazione: quando cerco di installare i driver ALSA o il gstreamer il terminale mi completa il messaggio con errori che succedono a comandi come "leaving directory [e qui il nome della directory]".
Ho provato a premettere il comando su [nome account], poi la password, per avere la priorità di amministatore, ma forse non riesco a impostare la modalità per avere TUTTI i prerequisiti di root.
Fatto sta che non ho potuto installare i driver, Totem mi dà l'errore "Impossibile aprire la risorsa in scrittura", mentre nelle preferenze audio non ho la possibilità di provare i suoni perchè è come se fossi senza scheda...

Spero di aver spiegato il problema. Da ignorante, penso che io non riesca ad installare i driver perchè non ho i permessi adatti, ma come li imposto?

Il problema ora è la configurazione: nella procedura con l'alsaconf ho inserito 2 schede audio invece di una (entrambe Soundblaster Audigy 512), e mi sono spuntate una Intel ICH5 e un'altra... Come si disinstalla la seconda? Perchè ora il suono non esce lo stesso, ma i programmi non mi danno più l'errore della risorsa in scrittura, perchè la scheda è stata riconosciuta, ma forse il sistema operativo non ha impostata l'una o l'altra.

P.S. come devo impostare le Preferenze Audio? Scelgo la scheda o l'opzione ALSA?

Ti spiego meglio: durante la configurazione io, stupidamente, dopo aver detto ad alsaconf di configurare la scheda scegliendo, dalla lista che mi proponeva, la Creative Soundblaster 512 (che usa il driver emu10k1) ho detto di nuovo di settare la suddetta Creative, così nei menù dei settaggi audio dei vari programmi (come l'ALSA Mixer) che delle Preferenze Audio mi spuntano 2 schede audio. Può essere questo il fatto che, pur il sistema riconoscendo la scheda, vedendone però 2 non sa quale scegliere, e seppur io l'abbia scelta dal menù delle Preferenze Audio il S.O. non sa come comportarsi perchè non vede l'altra "fisicamente"?

C'è un problema: mi sono accorto che dopo la suddetta installazione dei driver il BIOS mi ha attivato anche la scheda audio integrata (la mia scheda madre è una ASUS P4C800 Deluxe). Dopo averla disattivata (causa conflitti in Windows) in Ubuntu non ho più una scheda audio, cioè s'è cancellato tutto. Come fare per fare riconoscere la mia E-MU 0404?

P.S. seguendo la procedura d'installazione dei driver ALSA 1.0.13 non so cosa fare dopo aver eseguito lo script ./snddevices, cioè i seguenti passaggi:

7) Edit your kernel module config (either /etc/modprobe.conf or
/etc/modules.conf, depending on the kernel version). If you are not
sure, what to do, you may try the alsaconf script available in
the alsa-utils package.

8) Run 'modprobe snd-xxxx' where xxxx is the name of your card.
Note: All ALSA ISA drivers support ISA PnP natively, so you don't need
isapnptools any more. Don't use both together. It will
conflict. For disabling the ALSA ISA PnP support, specify
--with-isapnp=no configure switch.

C'è una cosa che non mi torna.... la tua scheda è supportata da alsa, e alsa è incluso in ubuntu.
C'è qualcosa che non mi torna sul perchè la tua scheda non funzioni.

@Artemisyu: chiedi tutto quello che può servirti. Ma cosa intendi per "supportata"? Che la dovrebbe riconoscere? Ti faccio notare che, molto probabilmente, non ho completato l'installazione in modo corretto (vedi il mio penultimo post).
