C'è che viene meno il carattere di informazione di questa discussione, rivolta a segnalare i decessi recenti di quei musicisti molto noti all'estero. 1, 2 o 3 anni fa comincia a essere troppo poco recente, e in vari casi sono gia' state segnalate sul forum (che esiste dal luglio 1999) quelle morti.

Ed è sbagliato postare le foto di qualcuno senza scrivere chi è, come se tutti dovessero automaticamente riconoscerlo.

E' incredibile ma nel giro di pochi giorni sono morti ben tre giganti del basso nel jazz, anche Percy Heath e Jimmy Woode

Percy Heath, contrabbassista dei Modern Jazz Quartet e il più grande tra i fratelli Heath è spirato giovedì 28 aprile in Southampton, N.Y. Aveva 81 anni ed era da tempo ammalato a causa di un male incurabile. I due fratelli, il sassofonista Jimmy e il batterista Albert "Tootie", si sono comunque esibiti al New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival lo stesso giovedì in onore dell'eredità musicale lasciata dal loro fratello.

Nato a Wilmington il 30 aprile 1923, cresciuto a Philadelphia, cominciò suonando il violino per poi passare al contrabbasso nel 1946 studiando alla Granoff School of Music. Successivamente, Percy Heath lavorò con il fratello Jimmy a New York e nella band di Howard McGhee. In seguito ha poi suonato con Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, J.J. Johnson, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Clifford Brown e Horace Silver.

Nel 1951, sostituì Ray Brown nel quartetto di John Lewis e Milt Jackson entrando così a far parte di quello che sarebbe divenuto il Modern Jazz Quartet con cui vi rimase per circa 40 anni.

Dal 1975, quando il Modern Jazz Quartet si era oramai sciolto, costituì insime ai fratelli la Heath Brothers Band con cui ha girato il mondo fino all'ultimo.

Jimmy Woode, l'ultimo contrabbassista vivente dell'orchestra di Ellington è scomparso lo scorso 23 aprile 2005 in Lindenwold, NJ, all'età di 76 anni.

James Bryant Woode, nato il 23 September 1928, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Suona sin dagli inizi con musicisti come Nat Pierce, Flip Phillips e Zoot Sims, ma accompagna anche le cantanti Ella Fitzgerald e Sarah Vaughan. Ne 1955 viene invitato da Duke Ellington a far parte della sua orchestra con cui vi rimarrà per cinque anni. Successivamente, trasferitosi in Europa, entra a far parte della Clarke-Boland Big Band.

Negli anni '60 e '70 effettua innumerevoli gig con molti musicisti tra cui Don Byas e Johnny Griffin, oltre a lvorare continuamente in radio, televisione e studi di registrazione. Nel 1988 parteciap ad una reunion di musicisti appartenuti alle orchestre di Ellington facendo coppppia col grande batterista Sam Woodyard.

Stan Levey, nato il 5 aprile 1925, a Philadelphia, è deceduto il 19 aprile 2005 all'età di 80 anni.

Lo si e' appreso a funerali avvenuti dal suo entourage. Nato il 13 agosto 1925 a Cleveland (Ohio), Ernest Harold ''Benny'' Bailey inizio' da ragazzino a suonare il pianoforte e il flauto, ma decise di suonare la tromba dopo aver ascoltato dei dischi di Louis Armstrong e Roy Eldridge.

È morto alla soglia dei 90 anni il musicista e direttore d’orchestra russo Oleg Lundstrem, pioniere della musica jazz nell’Urss negli anni del “disgelo”. Lo ha reso noto ai media moscoviti il suo collega e amico Gheorghi Garanian. Lundstrem aveva 89 anni e la sua scomparsa è stata definita una grave perdita da critici e musicisti, russi e stranieri. La leggendaria pianista e vocalist Shirley Horn si è spenta ieri notte a Washington D.C. dove abitava, dopo una lunga malattia, all'età di 71 anni.

Ron Goldstein, Presidente e C.E.O. del Verve Music Group commenta: "Shirley Horn è stata una vera innovatrice. Ha creato uno stile unico sia pianisticamente sia come vocalist. Non solo era originale, ma anche talmente penetrante e talmente personale che solo pochi ebbero il coraggio di copiarlo. Era un gran personaggio, e mi mancheranno le conversazioni che solevo avere con lei, che avevano lo stesso carattere ironico che tutti amavamo anche nelle sue performance. La sua scomparsa è una grave perdita sia per la Verve, che per il Jazz, che per il mondo intero".

Nata il 1 maggio 1934, Shirley Horn iniziò gli studi di pianoforte a quattro anni. Dopo essersi diplomata in musica alla Howard University, Shirley Horn formò il suo primo trio nel 1954. Miles Davis la invitò ad aprire un concerto per lui al Village Vanguard nel 1960, impegno che la portò a concludere un contratto con la Mercury Records, e a portare avanti una amicizia durata tutta la vita con Miles Davis. Quincy Jones divenne un suo grande ammiratore e mentore in quel periodo, e produsse due dei suoi album: "Loads Of Love" (Mercury, 1963) e "Shirley Horn With Horns" (Mercury, 1963). Dopo avere lasciato l'etichetta a causa di divergenze di idee a livello creativo, incise vari album per l'etichetta Danish Steeplechase, cosa che cementò la sua reputazione di singolare talento. Shirley Horn fu una madre e una moglie devota, a tal punto che per anni evitò i tour per poter stare accanto alla sua famiglia, scegliendo di esibirsi principalmente in clubs nei dintorni di Washington D.C. e nella zona di Baltimora.

Nel 1968 firmò un contratto con la Verve, e incise una serie di album molto acclamati dalla critica che elevarono ulteriormente il suo profilo e la esposero a una nuova generazione di fan del jazz. Durante il sodalizio con la Verve incise quattordici album, e fu onorata da otto Grammy nominations. Fu eletta alla Lionel Hampton Jazz Hall Of Fame nel 1996 e nel 1998, si aggiudicò un Grammi per la miglior jazz performance per il suo Tributo a Miles Davis, "I Remember Miles". Nel 1999 ricevette il Phineas Newborn Jr. Award, con un concerto a tributo in suo onore. Molti altri sono i riconoscimenti ed i premi che le sono stati assegnati nel corso della sua carriera.
