We are back online after an OS upgrade to the upload/download file server. The outage was extended because we had to let the RAID resync. Service will be spotty as we catch up.

Ho notato che la RAC continua a rimanere inchiodata a 7800 e spiccioli, i pc fanno una fatica enorme a connettersi e uppare, e il pending oramai ha raggiunto i 15000 e rotti :cry: :cry: :cry:
Se sbloccano tutto e mi accreditano il pending decollo :D :D

Ma Enzina non te ne sei accorto che i problemi sono quasi sempre fine settimana? Ma con il tuo cache di 10 giorni non dovrebbero esserci dei problemi . . . un giorno piu' un giorno meno :confused:

Si ma la cache a 10 giorni con i dual xeon HT servono a ben poco, in circa 3 giorni azzero la cache; ma io, previdente, mi sono creato altre 5 cartelle boinc con altra cache cosi in giorni di magra come questi i miei pc non si fermano per mancanza di wu!!! ;) ;)

Stamattina sono riuscito ad uppare 4 cartelle boinc per circa 500 wu e domani se tutto va bene ne uppo altre 1500!!! :D

Si bravo questa e' la maniera! Mi riccordo un anno fa' quando cerano dei giorni/settimane con pocchisime caccole. Io faccevo piu' di una installazione BOINC in ogni macchina e' cosi avevo molte piu' caccole di quelle permesse :O .

Mi raccomando fai attenzione con la data di scadenza di queste cartelle (14 giorni max). Meglio buttare quelle cartelle vecchie ad scaccolare gratis. E se una cartella inizia a scaccolare w/u vecchie fare subito il "project reset". :D

Stamattina sono riuscito ad uppare 4 cartelle boinc per circa 500 wu e domani se tutto va bene ne uppo altre 1500!!! :D
Anch'io per ora non ho problemi di wu, se non sul mio portatile ma e' l'unico che si spegne ogni tanto.
Sono curioso di vedere che punteggi faremo noi due quando riaccenderanno tutto e accrediteranno i punti :D :D

E' stressante sta cosa, ed ingiusta...

Uno mette a disposizione tempo (nel mio caso molto visto che devo aggiornare manualmente) hardware e soldi per la ricerca e loro rcambiano così...... bah... :(

Io per fortuna un paio di macchine le ho salvate oggi, e sono riuscito ad uppare parecchie wu fatte, cmq ho l'impressione che non ci stanno capendo ben poco di cosa succeda alle macchine a Berkeley, appena il carico inizia a salire crolla tutto.....

There have been many failures over the past week. Another bug was found (and quickly patched) in our upload/download file server causing it to hang until reboot. Once that was remedied, both the scheduling server and the main web server had separate issues due to extremely high load.

In case you haven't noticed, we recently changed the URL setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu - instead of pointing to the old SETI@home "classic" project, it now leads users to the new BOINC-based version. As expected, this vastly increased the number of new users joining the BOINC project, and therefore increased the strain on our back-end servers. Soon we will stop new classic account sign-ups altogether, and eventually stop accepting classic results outright (with advance warning) - each step potentially increasing the demands on our hardware.

At this exact point there is no new hardware that BOINC could use as its various servers fail for one reason or another. This is because the classic project is still active and using up half of our server farm. This was soon change.

The classic "master science database server" (a 6 CPU Sun E3500) will be the first machine to be repurposed. We're busy migrating most of its data onto a new database server (an 8 CPU E3500). This migration had been slowed by recent (recoverable) disk failures, but should finish in a month or so. Before then, however, we are going to move the BOINC scheduler onto it. The actual file upload/download handler will remain on its current server, thereby spreading the whole scheduler system over two machines.

As soon as possible, we will add a second webserver (and maybe a third). The BOINC web site contains far more dynamically-generated content than the classic site, and therefore needs more power behind it. We don't really have any spares, so some machines will have to double as web servers and whatever else they are currently doing.

And as if that wasn't enough to worry about, the BOINC replica database has continually fallen further and further behind the master database (because the load on the master increases and the replica hardware is relatively inferior). Then yesterday it was rendered useless as a binary log on the master got corrupted. This didn't damage the master database - only the replica. So we're going to have to build the replica from scratch (or hold off until we somehow obtain between hardware for that).

More to come as things progress...

Pienamente d'accordo, perche' non lo proponi sul forum? :D :D :D

E poi questa tanto sbandierata stabilità delle macchine Sun, se un server ha un carico estremo ma e' stabile, rallentera' enormemente le sue prestazioni, ma non va in crash!!!

Ci è stato eccedenza di molti guasti la settimana passata. Un altro insetto è stato trovato (ed ha rattoppato rapidamente) in nostro assistente di lima di upload/download che la causa alla caduta fino a reboot. Una volta che quello fosse rimediato, sia l'assistente di programmazione che il web server principale hanno avuti edizioni singole dovuto il carico estremamente alto.

Nel caso non avete notato, recentemente abbiamo cambiato il URL setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu - invece di indicare al vecchio progetto "classico" SETI@home, ora conduce gli utenti alla nuova versione BOINC-basata. Come previsto, questo ha aumentato notevolmente il numero di nuovi utenti che partecipano a di BOINC e quindi ha aumentato lo sforzo sui nostri assistenti posteriori. Presto arresteremo il nuovo cliente classico segno-aumentiamo complessivamente e finalmente smettiamo di accettare i risultati classici completamente (con avvertimento di avanzamento) - ogni punto potenzialmente che aumenta le esigenze nei confronti dei nostri fissaggi.

A questo punto esatto non ci sono nuovi fissaggi che BOINC non potrebbe utilizzare mentre i relativi vari assistenti si guastano per un motivo o un altro. Ciò è perché il progetto classico è ancora attivo ed esaurente la metà del nostro podere dell'assistente. Ciò era presto cambiamento.

"l'assistente matrice della base di dati di scienza" classico (un sole E3500 dei 6 CPU) sarà la prima macchina da essere repurposed. Siamo occupati migrare la maggior parte dei relativi dati su un nuovo assistente della base di dati (8 un CPU E3500). Questa espansione era stata ritardata tramite i guasti (ricuperabili) recenti del disc, ma dovrebbe rifinire in un mese o così. Prima di allora, tuttavia, stiamo andando spostare il programmatore di BOINC su esso. L'alimentatore reale della lima upload/download rimarrà sul relativo assistente corrente, quindi spargente il sistema intero del programmatore oltre due macchine.

Appena possibile, aggiungeremo un secondo webserver (e forse un terzo). Il Web site di BOINC contiene il soddisfare molto dinamico-generato che il luogo classico e quindi gli ha bisogno di più alimentazione. Realmente non abbiamo alcune parti di recambio, in modo da alcune macchine dovranno raddoppiarsi come assistenti e qualsiasi altra cosa che di fotoricettore attualmente stiano facendo.

E come se quello non fosse abbastanza da preoccuparsi circa, la base di dati di replica di BOINC è caduto continuamente ulteriormente ed avanza dietro la base di dati matrice (perché il carico sul padrone aumenta ed i fissaggi di replica sono relativamente inferiori). Allora ieri è stato reso inutile come un binario entra il padrone ottiene corrotto. Ciò non ha danneggiato la base di dati matrice - soltanto la replica. Così stiamo andando dovere sviluppare la replica da zero (o tenere fuori fino a che non ci verifichiamo in qualche modo fra fissaggi per quello).

Ci sono stati diversi guasti la scorsa settimana. Un altro errore è stato trovato (e prontamente risolto) nel nostro file server di upload/download che gli provocava il blocco ed il riavvio. Quando questo è stato risolto, entrambi i web server (lo scheduler e il principale) hanno avuto problemi dovuti all'eccessivo carico
Nel caso non l'abbiate notato, abbiamo recentemente modificato l'URL setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu - invece di puntare al vecchio progetto SETI@home "classic", ora porta gli utenti alla nuova versione basata su BOINC. Come previsto, questo ha drammaticamente incrementato il numero di nuovi utenti che si sono uniti al progetto BOINC, ed ovviamente ha incrementato il carico suoi nostri server. Presto impediremo la registrazione di nuovi account al classic, ed eventualmente fermeremo l'accettazione di risultati dal classic (con un avviso) - ogni passaggio potenzialmente può incrementare le richieste al nostro hardware.

In questo momento non c'è nessun nuovo hardware che BOINC può utilizzare in quanto i vari servers vanno in errore o per un motivo o per un altro.
Questo perchè il progetto classic è ancora attivo ed usa la metà della nostra server farm. Questo cambierà presto.

Il "server database master della scienza" del classic (un Sun E3500 esaprocessore) sarà la prima macchina ad essere convertita. Siamo impegnati a trasferire tutti i suoi dati su un nuovo server di database (E3500 a 8 processori). Effettivamente non abbiamo parti di ricambio, così alcune macchine dovranno duplicare i web servers e qualunque cosa essi stiano facendo.

E, se non bastasse tutto ciò, il database replica di BOINC è andato in crash diverse volte rispetto al datamase principale (a causa del carico incrementato sul master e la relativa insufficienza dell'hardware di quello replica). Poi ieri si è reso inutilizzabile il log binario sul master, che si è corrotto. Questo fatto non ha danneggiato il database principale - solo quello replica. Quindi siamo costretti a costruire una replica da zero (o non usarla affatto finchè non verificheremo il problema hardware).

Ho notato che la RAC continua a rimanere inchiodata a 7800 e spiccioli, i pc fanno una fatica enorme a connettersi e uppare, e il pending oramai ha raggiunto i 15000 e rotti :cry: :cry: :cry:

ho scaricato la versione nuova (credo), la 4.45, mi sono registrato, ho joinato il gruppo hwupgrade (ovvio ;)) ma non capisco se sta lavorando... o meglio, vedo che sta lavorando ma non capisco se sta funzionando in maniera corretta.

Lo spiega uno del team in un thread del loro forum, l'hanno messo per intendere che se troviamo scritto disabled, vuol dire che si sono accorti del problema e stanno intervenendo. Attualmente pare che la ricompilazione dei validator vada a buon fine, ma una volta in esecuzione arrivi un bel seg-fault. Se non altro lo scaccolo prosegue, la validazione in effetti non crea perdite di calcolo, solo di statistiche non aggiornate. :D :D

Il problema con il Validator era iniziato Venerdi a mezzo giorno. Guarda il nostro >> RAC Chart << (http://home.btconnect.com/Gabys_Bazar/chart/SETI_30265_RAC_1.png) vedi quando il RAC e' iniziato a sciendere per tutti noi. Quelli di Berkeley si erano accorti subito. Se ti scrivi nel Mailing List degli sviluppatori puoi vedere tutti i messagi interni.

Quelli di Berkeley dicono che per loro questo non e' un problema urgente perche tutto sta' funzionando (soltanto il credito che non e' aggiornati). Tutti noi possiamo scaccolare, fare download, upload senza nessun problema. Comunque adesso hanno cambiato lo Status Page . . . se vediamo rosso come prima e' un problema che loro non si sono accorti invece se lo status e' arancione "Disable" voldire che loro conoscono il problema e ci stanno lavorando. :)

Salve a tutti,
mi sono appena collegato con due Pc a Bonic, solo che su uno dei due (entrambi sulla stessa dsl) non mi visualizza la home page di seti@home, climate prediction, heinstein home :mad: mi da solo le home page di Protein predictor (dove mi sono iscritto) e LCH home. Deve essere senz altro un problema sul mio pc visto che l'altro le visualizza tutte!
Le impostazioni di explorer sono di default e il firewell di window mi sembra apposto, forse è il router... non saprei! :muro:
Qualcuno ha avuto il mio stesso problema?!?! :mc: Help!

Visto che hanno recentemente cambiato l'indirizzo del sito, potrebbe essere un problema di DNS non aggiornati su quel pc...prova a cancellare tutti i dati temporanei di internet, cronologia, cache e cookie del browser e riprova :)

Since we're in the middle of an outage, why not write up another general update?

The validators are still disabled. The only public effect is a delay in crediting results. No credit should be lost, as it is always granted to results that still exist in the database, and they aren't deleted until they are validated and assimilated. So various queues are building up, but that's about it.

While this is an inconvenience for our users, repairing this program has taken a back seat to higher priority items (that we expected or appeared out of nowhere).

First and foremost, galileo crashed last night. We haven't yet fully diagnosed the cause (as we've been busy keeping to the scheduled outage for mundane but necessary items like database backups, rebooting servers to pick up new automounts, and UPS testing). At this point we think it is a CPU board failure, but the server is back up (and working as a scheduling server, but not much else). That's the bad news.

The good news is that arriving today (just in the nick of time) is a new/used E3500 identical to galileo (graciously donated by Patrick Jeski - thanks Patrick!). It should be arriving at the loading dock as I type this message. So at least we already have replacement parts on site. Whether or not we need these parts remains to be seen, but the extra server definitely creates a warm, fuzzy feeling.

With galileo failing, and other splitter machines buckling under the load of increased demand, we are slowly running out of work to send out. We tried to add the machine "gates," but due its low RAM (and the fact it is still serving a bunch of SETI classic cgi requests) it didn't work very well. We'll try to add more splitter power today after the outage.

One of our main priorities right now is ramping down all the remaining pieces of SETI classic and preparing for the final shutdown. This includes sending out a mass e-mail, converting all the cgi programs to prevent future editing (account updates, team creation, joining, etc.), and buffing up the BOINC servers as best we can before the dam breaks.

As well, the air conditioning in our closet began failing again over the past week. While this time machines didn't get as hot as before, facilities took a long look at the system and determined that there is indeed a gas leak (freon or whatever they use besides freon these days). More gas was added which will last a few weeks until the problem is fixed.

Addendum from previous post:

The outage took a bit longer than expected - the database dump had to be restarted twice (we reorganized our backup method a little bit, which required some "debugging"). We did everything we set out to do except the UPS testing, so that will be postponed.

The machine "gates" wasn't working out as a splitter, so we went with "sagan" instead (even though it is still the classic SETI@home data server and therefore quite busy). Every little bit helps. Eventually we added "kosh" as well, as it wasn't doing much at the time.

Last night the upload/download server ran out of processes. This happened because the load was very heavy, which causes adverse effects in apache. When hourly apache restarts were issued (for log rotation), old processes wouldn't die and new ones would fill the process queue. By this morning we had over 7000 httpd processes on the machine! Apparently some apache tuning is in order.

This went unnoticed, though the lack of server status page updates did get noticed. The page gets updated every 10 minutes (along with all kinds of internal-use BOINC status files). Once every few hours the whole system "skips a turn" due to some funny interaction with cron. But occasionally the whole system stops altogether until somebody comes along and "kicks it" (i.e. removes some stale lock files).

So we noticed the status page was stale, "kicked" the whole system and it started up again (temporarily). Everything looked okay, so we went to bed, only to realize the gravity of the problem in the morning (the system was hanging because it would get stuck trying to talk to hosed server).

There was also a 2-hour lab-wide network outage during all this. Not sure what happened there, but that's out of our hands.

No è stato solo un piccolo down manuale (ma perchè non hanno messo disabled allora invece di not running? :muro: ), per sistemare alcune cose sul database principale dove vengono raccolti tutti i dati delle elaborazioni:

We had to reboot castelli (the BOINC master science database) this morning for maintenance. Namely, it needed to pick up a new automount (which can only happen via rebooting). So, we had to stop the splitters/assimilator a while to do so.

Piu' che scendere a picco direi che si stanno normalizzando, i 3 giorni senza accrediti hanno creato un boost nelle RAC che non e' veritiero, e' stato bello avere una RAC di oltre 10000 ma sapevo che non era la mia, dovrei calare fino ai 9200-9300 che avevo prima.

Somebody on the message boards asked about the status of our database migration. After recovering from the crashes in early June, the process has been slowed by two things: moving the scheduler onto the old database server (thereby reducing the CPU power), and a very long IDL job (for HI data analysis) that was eating up a lot of memory. The IDL job finally finished, and now that the long weekend is beyond us we are ramping the migration processes up as fast as they will go until they compete with the scheduler. It's hard to give an estimate on time of completion as we are going tape by tape, and each tape inserted vastly different amounts of signals in our database.

The outage this morning was for a database backup. Normally, this shouldn't require an outage, as we would snapshot our replica and be done with it. But since our user count has grown the replica has been less and less able to keep up with the master database. So we have had to do our weekly backups by shutting everything down and doing a mysqldump on a quiescent master database. During the outage we tweaked the replica server to hopefully improve its I/O, but we remain skeptical. The plan is to use the old classic SETI@home data server as the replica once classic is turned off.

As well, we finally swapped some UPS's around, putting smart backup power on the master database server. We had to take the web server down as it was on one of the swapped UPS's. Due to some minor setbacks the outage took an hour longer than expected, but everything is back up and running now.

Se siete vuoti, cioe' avete uppato tutti i risultati finiti e non avete piu' caccole da scaccolare . . . provate a fare Detach e di nuovo l'Attach. Boinc da priorita' ad avere caccole a quelli che fanno l'Attach (nuove macchine). :help:

Attenzione se avete ancora caccole da uppare non fatte detach! Quando si fa' il Reset/Attach si perdono tutte le caccole. :(

No non perdi i crediti. Perdi solo le wu che stai elaborando.
Slava la cartella BOINC su un altro disco, poi formatta.

Una volta installato tutto, reinstalla BOINC originale e ricopiali la cartella di backup, così non perdi nulla.

Forse gli da poche WU perchè ha un turnaround troppo alto.....oppure perchè ha le percentuali di elaborazione basse.

Quello è poco ma sicuro....solo che ora non conviene farlo perchè a berkeley è tutto spento...meglio scaccolare le WU in cache ed aspettare domani (se tutto va bene) :D

sembra che la sfiga abbia messo radici. oggi avrei la possibilità di infettare il mondo e i server sono down. sto riprogrammando il mio io in una versione talmente zen che non si è mai vista.

La maggior parte delle macchine è tornata attiva, ma l'UPS sulla macchina database sta avendo qualche problema. Il progetto tornerà attivo non appena l'avremo aggiustata

Last night we had an extended lab-wide power outage to replace a (rather large) faulty breaker. This faulty breaker was part of the cause of two unexpected outages earlier this year. We've been told that during further examination three more potentially bad breakers were discovered. Not sure what this means exactly, except that we will eventually need another outage to fix all that. However, the nearby MSRI building (that stands for Math Sciences Research Institute, and is pronounced "misery") is wrapping up major renovation. So the lab has been planning some down-time anyway when our neighbors are added back to the grid. This may happen as soon as August.

On the way down last night, and on the way back up this morning, we reconfigured and tested our smart UPS system on the main BOINC data server (and BOINC web server). There was some weird behavior and confusion both times, but this was eventually sorted out, and now this system should safely shut down in the event of a power outage. Note that we had a work-around solution in place for months (that was also tested and proven to work), but it was not nearly as graceful as a smart UPS.

Tutto l'impianto elettrico di Berkeley è marcio e devono continuamente staccare la corrente per eseguire riparazioni... ovviamente quando non cade da sè.
Hanno ritarato gli UPS ed ora i server "dovrebbero" ( :mc: ) spegnersi correttamente in caso di black-out.
Questa è un soluzione momentanea perchè hanno altri lavori da fare nei prossimi mesi (e che mettono, gruppo elettrogeno a gasolio? :mbe: )
