Dopo essere passata ad Android la divisione smartphone è andata in perdita, su due anni (2010-2011), in soli due trimestri, due trimestri in cui ci sono stati due disastri naturali, il terremoto in Giappone e l'inondazione in Thailandia: For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012, Sony incurred expenses of 5.9 billion yen (72 million U.S. dollars), including charges for the disposal or impairment of fixed assets and inventories and restoration costs (e.g., repair, removal and cleaning costs) directly related to the damage caused by the Earthquake. In addition, Sony incurred other losses and expenses of 6.3 billion yen (77 million U.S. dollars), which included idle facility costs at 4 manufacturing sites. These expenses related to direct damages and other charges mentioned above were partially offset by insurance recoveries that Sony received during the current fiscal year. As a result of direct damage from inundation of Sony’s manufacturing facilities starting in October 2011, resulting from the Floods, Sony incurred expenses of 13.2 billion yen (161 million U.S. dollars) during the current fiscal year, including charges for the disposal or impairment of fixed assets and inventories and restoration costs (e.g., repair, removal and cleaning costs) directly related to damages caused by the Floods. In addition to these direct damages, due to the difficulty in procuring parts and components, production at several manufacturing facilities temporarily ceased. As a result, Sony incurred charges of 13.9 billion yen (170 million U.S. dollars) during the current fiscal year, consisting of idle facility costs at manufacturing sites and other additional expenses. Sony also saw a negative impact from the postponement of certain product launches caused by temporary cessation of production at several manufacturing facilities, as well as significantly lower demand from commercial customers resulting from the Floods.

Abbiamo di fronte un'azienda che era in forte perdita, è tornata in positivo grazie al passaggio ad Android ed ha fatto due perdite rilevanti in seguito a due disastri naturali. Ma forse Sony non sarebbe dovuta passare ad Android, così non ci sarebbero stati il terremoto in Giappone e l'inondazione in Thailandia!
