This is a repost from the Microsoft smartphone newsgroup. Darren Sum has found a definitive way of unlocking your phone after the Orange update of February 24th 2003 (see update page for more info)
Just wanted to let you know that I finally did it (over fifty tries) - I unlocked the bloody thing - here is my idiots guide to doing it (although saying that there are prob going to be some more probs).
1) Update your phone through orange and do orange backup and acti sync backup.
2) Enable sim-lock on your phone (you don't need to do this bit, but it makes things easier later on - see note below) - now be prepared for something here - ie you prob do not know the number and will block your phone - orange will give you the unlock code free of charge - just call them 150 from orange phones or 07973 100 150 - oh and press options 6 then 2 you don't need to wait for them to prompt you!
Note - Got this tip from Ian Relf - Your readers may experience a little difficulty getting the code from Orange, I did. Basically, Orange jerked me around kept wanting to know why I wanted the code, why I had forgotten it, etc, etc (and still have not told me my code). Anyway, I discovered (by R'ing TFM) that the default SIM Card PIN is 1111.
Note - This slows down the phone boot up so increases the chance of getting the file in place before it is processed. The update seems to improve the start up time, so getting the timing right is more important.
3) Use Active-Sync and open you smartphone to the windows directory and leave it open.
4) Copy the file "mxip_oem_10.provxml" onto your desktop.
Note - Can't find it ? You may need to change a setting your PC. Go to "Control Panel" on your PC, click "Folder Options" - Click the "View" tab and click the relevant boxes to SHOW hidden files and system files. You should now be able to find the files!
5) Open it (it may ask you to choose a programme to open it with - if so use notepad) and scroll down to the security policy section, which looks something like this..
<characteristic type="SecurityPolicy">
<parm name="4101" value="64"/>
<parm name="4102" value="0"/>
<parm name="4111" value="111"/>
<parm name="4119" value="298"/>
</characteristic>
6) Delete the line <parm name="4111"...
..and change the numbers of the other lines so it says....
<characteristic type="SecurityPolicy">
<parm name="4101" value="64"/>
<parm name="4102" value="1"/>
<parm name="4119" value="196"/>
</characteristic>
Save that file and make sure it is called "mxip_oem_10.provxml" - (tip reopen it on your desktop to ensure that the security settings have been saved.
7) Right click on that file on the desktop and click "copy".
8) Right now you need to do a hard reset - power down the phone - take it off the cradle.
9) Now you need to do this bit with speed so hold down the voice recorder button (the one one the left side of you phone below the power).
10) Hold down the power button.
11) As soon as their is life and a white screen with wrtting turns up press and HOLD the action key.
12) If you done this right, you will see a menu with some lines and numbers, but at the bottom it should say 8 Erase ISPM, if not pull the power and do it again.
13) Press 8 and wait till it does it and says Passed.
14) You can't get out of this menu to the canary screen like you use to but instead you just hold the power button and it will light up as before.
15) Now heres where it gets interesting - the orange start up screen will appear and as always it will change to the blue smartphone screen later (say a minute).
16) Before the blue screen comes up this is what ya got to do - make sure you can still see the smartphone/windows folder and that you remebered to copy the file (see step 4).
17) Line up the spv with the cradle and drop it into it as soon as the screen goes blue.
18) Now put your mouse over the windows file and right click like crazy until the word "paste" is available - once it is, left click on paste. Note - you could also try holding down CTRL and hammering "V" until it asks if you wanna overwrite the file. (Tip from Paul Teale)
Note - stuck here ? Try the auto-copying tool to do this for you!
19) It will ask you if you want to overwrite the existing file - click yes asap.
20) Now if it is done properly the new actisync relationship wizard thing will not appear until after the file is copied - if it does this then you 99% certain that you've done it - if not start again from step 8.
21) Create a relationship with the comp, copy all your IPSM files back.
22) Get an unsigned app - see www.coolsmartphone.com for apps and test it.
Grazie lo stesso.
