Ciao a tutti, ho un problema su un computer con monitor asus vw193d. Ho installato Ubuntu 9.10, e le uniche risoluzioni possibili sono 800*600 e 640*480. Ho letto che bisogna creare un file xorg.conf, ma come si fa? Grazie

innanzitutto che scheda video hai? Il problema comunque sta nell'edid, dai un'occhiata in giro in proposito.

Per caso hai attaccato due monitor alla scheda video?
A me succedeva una cosa del genere perché prendeva l'EDID del monitor spento (un tradizionale CRT, e difatti non mi aspettavo un funzionamento simile!), e su quello acceso (un LCD) mi faceva scegliere solo le risoluzioni dell'altro.
Se è questo il caso, fai partire X con il solo monitor che vuoi utilizzare acceso, e copia le Modeline dal file di log di xorg (generalmente lo trovi come /var/log/Xorg.0.log ).
Aggiungile al tuo xorg.conf (che ti ricordo essere facoltativo, visto che HAL lo crea da solo ad ogni avvio di X, quindi può contenere anche solo le specifiche che vuoi imporre, senza che tu debba configurarci ogni device) e dovrebbe andare.

no è un solo monitor, quello che ho elencato sopra. Questo è il pc di un amico, gli ho installato per la prima volta ubuntu 9.10 e ho riscontrato questo problema... anche collegando un altro monitor le risoluzioni sono sempre le stesse. Domani andrò di nuovo da lui e cercherò di risolvere. Secondo voi configurando il file xorg.conf risolvo?

Prova, magari è tutto lì il problema.
Ad ogni modo puoi iniziare con un "X -configure ./xorg.conf.new" che ti crea il file coi parametri letti dal sistema, e che puoi andare a modificare inserendoli in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Identifier è lo stesso che trovi scritto nella sezione "ServerLayout" alla voce "Screen".
"Monitor" e "Device" sono gli identificatori dello schermo e della scheda video che trovi nelle sezioni relative.
le risoluzioni che vedi qui sopra sono solo un esempio, se usi una 1280x1024 o altro aggiungi pure.
puoi anche aggiungere anche una sola SubSection, ad esempio:

grazie, oggi pomeriggio proverò. Cosa sono le depth?

depth è la profondità del colore,
1bit=binaco e nero
4bit=16 colori
16bit=65536
ecc...

se il monitor o la scheda non supportano una certà profondità del colore elimina la sottosezione relativa a quella profondità, ad esempio io ho una scheda vecchissima che regge al massimo 16bit

ho modificato il file e purtroppo non funziona.... ho editato il file come hai scritto tu e dava un errore, diceva che doveva andare in "modalità grafica ridotta" o qualcosa del genere.

Ho modificato i campi indicati, la risoluzione del monitor è 1400 x 900, quindi ho calcolato modeline scrivendo:

cvt 1400 900 60 -v (cosa fa l'opzione -v?)
quando eseguo questo comando esce questo warning:

Warning: Aspect Ratio is not CVT standard.


Non so se può influire il fatto che il computer su cui sto eseguendo questo comando è diverso da quello dove andrò a testare il file.
Inoltre ci sono alcuni parametri che non so se sono corretti:


HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0
VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0


ho cercato le caratteristiche del monitor (asus VW193d-B) e ho trovato questo:
Max Sync Rate (V x H) 76 Hz x 82 kHz
ma non ho trovato i valori minimi. Devo sostituire questi valori con 76 e 33?
Ci sono altre cose da correggere per questo monitor? Questo è il file che ho modificato, se mi dite che può andar bene lo provo. Grazie

Ti proporrei questi valori per il monitor:
HorizSync 76.0 - 81.0
VertRefresh 75
Lasciando ai driver la possibilità di impostare un sync orizzontale tra 76 e 81 kHz (massimo appena ridotto rispetto al massimo assoluto del monitor), mentre refresh verticale impostiamolo al valore corretto.

L'opzione -v di cvt gli dice solo di essere verboso, cioè di dare più informazioni possibili (man cvt).

Poi, riguardo all'xorg.conf, vedo che hai impostato gli nv (Driver "nv"), li stai usando perché gli NVidia non funzionano? Non sapevi dell'esistenza degli nvidia?
Gli nv sono molto limitati rispetto ai driver NVidia binari.

Cavolo che log simpatico i driver VESA...

Ah, non hai specificato cosa succede interrogando l'EDID (http://www.hwupgrade.it/forum/showpost.php?p=29971617&postcount=8), hai provato?

Il primo passo sarebbe far funzionare i driver NVidia.

Cosa hai provato a fare per installare/far funzionare gli NVidia?
So che in Ubuntu va di moda Envyng (http://ubuntuguide.net/install-nvidiaati-graphics-card-driver-in-ubuntu-910karmic), con la tua scheda puoi usare qualsiasi driver recente, ma preferibilmente i 190 o i 195.

ho provato ad installare i driver nvidia che si trovano cliccando su sistema->amministrazione->driver hardware. Ho trovato due versioni del driver, la 173 e la 185, quest'ultima è raccomandata. Ho installato quest'ultima e dopo il riavvio del sistema lo schermo era nero... Ho editato il file xorg sostituendo il driver nvidia con quello vesa, e ho potuto utilizzare il computer, anche se con una risoluzione bassissima di 800*600. Ora proverà con Envyng, speriamo bene...

L'altra volta non mi ero accorto che non hai accennato allo strumento ufficiale Ubuntu per installare i driver proprietari (http://help.ubuntu-it.org/9.10/ubuntu/hardware/it/jockey.html): lo hai già provato?

Se non ha funzionato nessuno di questi strumenti, l'unica alternativa che io conosco è l'installazione manuale dei binari ufficiali (http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx).

si ho provato ad installare i driver proprietari nvidia cliccando su sistema->amministrazione->driver hardware Ho trovato due versioni del driver, la 173 e la 185, quest'ultima è raccomandata. Ho installato la 185ma dopo il riavvio del sistema lo schermo era nero, quindi ho editato il file xorg sostituendo il driver nvidia con quello vesa, e ho potuto utilizzare il computer, anche se con una risoluzione bassissima di 800*600. Questa non è una conseguenza dell'installazione dei driver nvidia, ho questo problema da quando ho installato ubuntu.

Un mio amico mi ha parlato di xrandr per aumentare la risoluzione, lo conoscete? Comunque a me non interessa l'accelerazione grafica ma solo avere la risoluzione corretta, ci sono altri tentativi che posso fare? Grazie

ma il driver corretto per la scheda video montata lo hai installato ?

Dando per scontato che il monitor supporti risoluzioni più elevate, l'unica possibilità dovrebbe essere quella di installare il driver corretto per la tua scheda video.

Quello che ti sta succedendo é il bello delle cose automatiche: se funzionano OK, altrimenti sei nella cacca ...

Col vecchio XOrg se non funzionava da solo facevi tutto a mano finché andava ...

Non riesco a rimuovere i driver 185, ho provato con Envyng e non ci sono riuscito. Comunque a me basterebbe riuscire ad utilizzare una risoluzione più alta, 800x600 su un 19 pollici è terribile...

Se hai installato i driver da utility ubuntu hai provato a disinstallarli da li ?

Controlla se il driver in oggetto è attivato. Se la risposta è affermativa basta che clicchi su Rimuovi dopo averlo selezionato.

il problema è che non riesco a rimuoverlo... cosa ne pensi della mia idea?

ho comprato una scheda video geforce 8400 gs e l'ho montata. Ho lanciato la live e la risoluzione è quella corretta, ma la scheda integrata continua a funzionare: eseguendo il comando

lspci | grep -i vga

ottengo questo risultato:

inoltre ci sono alcuni fastidi come la presenza di una riga nera larga circa 1 cm sulla destra del monitor e al caricamento compaiono due barre di caricamento, ma credo siano attribuibili al fatto che vede due schede. Come si disattiva la scheda integrata? la scheda madre è una MSI MS-7366

Fai un sudo update-pciids e ricontrolla l'output di lspci, dovrebbe riconoscere correttamente l'Unknown device 06e4

Tra le opzioni del BIOS che hai elencato non c'è traccia del comparto video.

Naturalmente avrai collegato il cavo del monitor alla nuova scheda, hai anche fatto una riconfigurazione del monitor per adattarlo alla nuova uscita video? Di solito c'è un pulsantino/opzione del menù, alcuni lo fanno in automatico ogni volta che si accendono.

Ci sono tre schede madri che appartengono alla serie MS-7366:

Ho provato a controllare il manuale della P6NGM-L (http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloadfile&dno=6006&type=manual) e non ho trovato riferimenti alla disabilitazione della scheda video integrata.

Unico riferimento al comparto video è PNP/PCI Configurations -> Primary Graphics Adapter: assicurati di avere selezionato PCI-E.

si è proprio così ed è impostato su PCI-E. Dopo l'installazione dei driver proprietari nvidia funziona tutto correttamente. Finalmente posso scrivere la parola fine a questa vicenda, grazie per il supporto :)
