Description: An older version of a commercial 3D modeler. This is a fully functional, full feature 3D application. Little information and support available. The modeling features are pretty good, but the rendering is lacking.

Description: Anim8or is a 3D modeling and animation program. It also has its own simple renderer, but it's quality is not top of the line. It is still a bit basic or experimental, and it lacks some features, but it is rapidly growing and can be useful. A nice simple program for simple and easy animating or modeling that is great for learning the concepts of 3d.

Description: "Art of Illusion is a free, open source 3D modeling and rendering studio. It is written entirely in Java, and should be usable on any Java Virtual Machine which is compatible with JDK 1.1 or later." Check the forums to find early beta releases of future versions. Latest version has features such as HDRI, and feature list is very rapidly growing. Reccomended.

Description: Free, basic version of Strata3D software, a 3D modeling suite. It has no restrictions, but lacks some of the features of the paid versions, plus or pro. It has an excellent raytracing engine. Its usefulness is limited due to the lack of features, but it can be upgraded for a reasonable price.

Description: "Teddy is a sketch-based 3D modeling software. You can make interesting 3D models just by drawing freeform strokes." Models can be textured using Chameleon, Teddy's sister program. The Chameleon homepage is at http://www.mtl.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~take.../chameleon.htm. Both programs are very simplistic and not all that useful. Fun to play with though, and no installation required.

Terragen – Windows – free for personal, non-commercial use
Restrictions on free version: Several features disabled, render size and terrain size limited

Description: 3D landscape and scenery generator. Capable of producing photo-realistic images, and easy enough for anyone to use. It is constantly being updated and enhanced. The limitations on the free version are hardly noticeable. Wide variety of plugins and third party applications are available for use with Terragen. Highly recommended.

Description: Wings 3D is a polygon mesh modeler inspired by Nendo from Izware. It has weak texturing capabilities, and weak rendering capabilities, so you will need another application for those tasks. It is a powerful modeler. Reccomended.
