Hex and Quad Core Westmere for Desktop in 2010?
The last bits of information Intel revealed have to do with its high end desktop/workstation/server intentions with Westmere. The 6-core Westmere is a 240mm^2 chip made up of 1.17B transistors: That’s six cores on a single die, but with 12MB of L3 cache. Remember that Nehalem/Lynnfield have 8MB and Clarkdale has 4MB. Nehalem’s chief architect, Ronak Singhal told me that he wanted to maintain at least 2MB of L3 per core on the die. A 6-core Westmere adheres to that policy. The chip works in existing LGA-1366 sockets, so you still have three DDR3 memory channels. 6C Westmere does support both regular DDR3 (1.5V) as well as low voltage DDR3 (1.35V). This is particularly useful in servers where you’ve got a lot of memory present, power consumption should be noticeably lower. The other big news is that Intel will be releasing 4-core variants of Westmere as well. Recently we’ve heard rumblings about a Core i7 970 on Intel’s roadmaps. I’m guessing this could be a 4-core/8-thread Westmere based part running at 3.2GHz for LGA-1366 sockets. The table below shows you the beauty of 32nm. Smaller die, more transistors: CPU Codename Manufacturing Process Cores Transistor Count Die Size Westmere 6C Gulftown 32nm 6 1.17B 240mm2 Nehalem 4C Bloomfield 45nm 4 731M 263mm2 Nehalem 4C Lynnfield 45nm 4 774M 296mm2 Westmere 2C Clarkdale 32nm 2 384M 81mm2 It also shows that there's a definite need for Intel to build a quad-core 32nm chip. Die sizes nearing 300mm2 aren't very desirable. The question is whether we'll see quad-core 32nm in the performance mainstream in 2010 or if we'll have to wait for Sandy Bridge in 2011 for that. My guess is that we'll see a high end quad-core based on Westmere this year, but Lynnfield won't get a 32nm successor until next year. We’ll find out soon enough. http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3733 |

Sandy Bridge to get 2X times faster graphics
Intel has informed some of its top account clients that its next generation CPU with integrated graphics will get much faster graphics. Intel quotes a twofold performance increase with the Sandy Bridge generation and probably it compares it with its existing architecture. It will be nice if Intel makes its integrated graphics 2X faster than the current Intel HD graphics inside Arrandale and Clarkdale, as these 32nm CPUs with stitched 45nm graphics core can play Call of Duty WoW at 1024x764 at an acceptable frame rate. Remember, with Sandy Bridge integrated graphics move onto the same die as the CPU and this will be Intel’s first 32nm graphics and probably world’s first 32nm graphics core. ATI and Nvidia plan to go to 28nm. When it comes to multimedia Intel simply tells you to expect advanced media and graphics capabilities, and of course it should be at least slightly better than the current 45nm stitched IGP in Arrandale and Clarkdale. |

Fastest Sandy Bridge to replace i7 930
2.8GHz mainstream quad core Intel's Core i7 930 is supposed to launch inQ1 2010 and this 2.8GHz quad-core should last all 2010 as the king of Intel’s MS3 fastest Mainstream category in the company's nomenclature. This should change in early 2011 as Sandy Bridge is supposed to replace this product. It is way too early to hear about any concrete clock speeds but we can confirm it’s a quad-core with improved performance clock to clock with Nehalem generation. Sandy Bridge will also be the first quad-core to get a monolithic CPU with graphics, as today you can only get integrated graphics with Clarkdale / Arrandale 32nm CPUs which feature a stitched 45nm graphics core. Sandy Bridge will also be the first monolithic dual core, with totally integrated graphics into same die as the CPU. Gulftown i7 980X to last all 2010 Sandy Bridge not for six cores Intel doesn’t have plans to introduce anything faster than the six-core Core i7 980X clocked 3.33GHz, at least not in 2010. This is the current plan that would only change if Intel feels challenged by AMD. Since we know that this is highly unlikely, the soon to be introduced Gulftown-based 3.33GHz six-core i7 980X will be the fastest CPU throughout 2010. Only in early 2011, in Q1, Intel plans to replace this CPU with something better and faster. The interesting part is that Sandy Bridge won't replace the six-core CPUs, but we expect a six or more core CPU to take its place, of course in 32nm. Sandy Bridge, like any Intel generation since 2006, is designed with the mobile segment in mind and these CPUs don’t even need quad cores. The market is happy with two cores as we don’t see much sense in quads for mobile computing. Intel 6 series chipset to come in Q1 2011 With Westmere CPUs Intel's next generation chipset simply codenamed Intel 6 series Express chipset should launch in Q1 2011. This chipset will be necessary for Sandy Bridge generation of 32nm processor and it will finally get SATA 6GB/s in Intel chipsets. Since CPU has a memory controller, display and some audio features integrated, there is not much for Intel to do in Northbridge, but we still don’t know if Intel 6 series can make it in one chip, we still expect two chips. The codename of the chipset is Cougar Point and we can only hope that USB 3.0 support is also there. Ultima modifica di persa : 05-02-2010 alle 11:33. |

Socket 775 holds 77 percent share
Socket 1366 only one percent Intel has been shipping Core "i" CPUs for more than a year now, but the good old LGA 775 processors still account for 77 percent of sales. This tells a story of its own, as LGA 775 keeps going strong and it will continue to hold almost 50 percent at the end of the year. These are the results of Intel's predictions for Q1 2010 sales. Socket LGA 1156, the new Lynnfield and Clarksfield socket, is responsible for 18 percent of all Intel shipments and its market share is supposed to grown to 44 percent in Q4 2010. Third most popular socket is the Atom one, that makes up some 5 percent of all Intel CPUs in Q1 and by Q4 2010 it should grow to 7 percent. The least popular socket is LGA 1366, the one that takes care of Nehalem generation of old Core i7 and soon to launch six-core Core i7. Its share won’t grow and this tells you that only one percent of all processors sold by Intel end up in the hands of enthusiasts who like super high end products. |
