Ubuntu problema driver geforce fx 5200

salve rag!
ho installato ormai da tempo ubuntu sul mio pc. su questo ho una scheda video geforce fx 5200 da 128 MB

siccome mi sono accorto che sul mio monitor 17" vedo i caratteri troppo piccoli volevo cambiare risoluzione... solo che quando setto la risoluzione 1024x768 e premo il pulsante test mi da errore...
dunque io non credo di aver mai installato driver.... la scheda viene riconosciuta come una nVidia Riva 128, Riva TNT, GeForce, nForce... ecc.... ... ma io non ho mai installato niente...
siccome vorrei utilizzare anche l'uscita tv senza problemi... vorrei installare tutto correttamente... come si fa???

Prova ad installare i driver proprietari.

Devi andare su Sistema -> Amministrazione -> Driver con restrizioni



Poi, siccome hai una NVIDIA, scegliere i NVIDIA:

si tratta di un sw che ti scarica i driver dal sito del produttore e provvede ad installare tutto...
cosa mi consigliereste di fare?

Non c'è nessuna differenza tra i due. Ci sono due "tipi" di driver: opensource e closedsource.

Detto in poche parole quelli open sono solamente per il 2D mentre queli closed sono anche per il 3D.

Con questi driver closed puoi per esempio usare applicazioni che fanno uso del 3D, avere Compiz per effetti grafici e giocare. Oltre al 3D danno anche il supporto per il dual e clone head.

Quello che ti ha installato prima Ubuntu erano proprio i driver closedsource.

Per quest'ultima cosa ( tv out ) non ti so dire perchè non l'ho mai utilizzato... Ma sotto Applicazioni dovresti avere il nvidia-settings che ti permette di configurare il dual head. ( una volta che ha configurato devi dirgli di salvare le modifiche su xorg.conf ) ravvii il server grafico ( ctrl + alt + backspace ) e dovrebbe andare tutto senza problemi.

Però so che sotto Amministrazione dovresti riuscire, sotto Schermi, a configurare anche il tv out senza problemi.

ooops.... dopo aver spento il pc per un po oggi lo ho acceso adesso e mi si è impostata la risoluzione a 2048x1.... ed ho dovuto riavviare x tre volte per far sistemare la situazione... si era impostato il monitor come lcd 2048x.... e non voleva saperne di tornare ctr normale... inoltre ora mi compare il logo nvidia appena sta per comparire il desktop... e ci mette di più a partire...

non so come mai.... ma è normale che faccia così?? speo non lo faccia più... tra un po riprovo...

in questo momento ho impostato monitor crt a 1028x768 e risoluzione 1024x768 @66Hz

cavolo ogni volta che riaccendo il pc mi da una risoluzione diversa!!

Apri xorg.conf con gedit andando sul terminale e fai: sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf , cancella tutto e metti questo che ti ho scritto, salva e ravvia.
Non dovrebbe darti più problemi.

scusa ma che modifiche hai apportato?? il monitor mi viene dato come "custom 1" cmq va!
ah aprendo con gedit il file xorg.conf ho visto che esso aveva delle tabulazioni... quello che ci ho incollato no... credo non ci faccia assolutamente niente vero?

mi faresti capire qualcosa in più... questo file non tratta solo la scheda video ma ha a che fare con tutto l'hardware...

Ho visto che il tuo xorg.conf è stato "sporcato" un pò.

Allora ho preso quello mio che era bello pulito e riadattato per il tuo caso

Semplicemente per la risoluzione, come puoi vedere, è stata impostata sotto Screen:

ho attivato l'uscita tv ed ora mi da quasi lo stesso problema di prima... vedo sul tv una parte del desktop ingigantita mentre sempre dopo il riavvio sul monitor piccolo ho una risoluzione altissima....

è più complicato di quanto sembra...
non mi funziona affatto... smanettando ora vedo solo quando carica il bios e lo ssplash... il desktop non c'è più...

Nessun problema.

Se ti va solamente sulla console e niente server X basta che scrivi "sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf" e poi "sudo nvidia-xconfig" e ti dovrebbe ripristinare il file.

Comunque su Schermo dovrebbe configurarti senza troppi problemi l'uscita video
