The word 'memory' was originally derived from 'cyclic memory'; meaning that a nickel-cadmium battery could remember how much energy was drawn on preceding discharges. nelle batterie di scarsa qualità si possono ingrossare i cristalli di cadmio se la batteria viene lasciata troppo a lungo nel caricatore o se non scaricata completamente PERIODICAMENTE (non sempre quindi). questo ingrossamento porta a una perdita di capacità e una accelerazione dell'autoscarica. questo vale sia per le ni-cd che le ni-mh e probabilmente anche per le nuove enloop

Quindi qualche effetto deleterio sui cristalli di cadmio e prestazioni esiste. Il punto è che molti non aspettano che le pile si scarichino ma ricaricano abitualmente prima, per es. i telefoni cordless, le nimh non sono perfette ma l'effetto dovrebbe essere minore delle pile al cadmio. E se la qualità conta spero che eneloop e compagnia siano pile di migliore qualità visto che costano più care.
