I've been having some of the same problems as others have mentioned earlier.
I purchased 2 PL3507 based 1394/usb2 combo enclosures several months ago and have been trying to trouble shoot their (1394) problems. Usually both drives will become corrupted to the point of not being readable by the OS. Requiring a file recovery program such as ezrecovery followed by a full initialization of the drive. I've updated both the drives since with the 11-09-04 prolific (chip C) firmware, and the problems with one drive have seemed to deminish. However strange as it may seem the other drive will not work with Windows 2000 (detects, but list as nonoperational) after the update, but works radomly with Winxp.
Based on my opersevation I'm beginning to think the problems with the Prolific bridges are more quality and design related issues than firmware. I think the firmware updates are attempts at masking a poor design or quality by the foundry. For those of you interested, you may find this link helpful for the current firmware updates.

FYI. both drives were identical configurations. Maxtor Quickview 250gb hdd. I actually swapped the Prolific bridge boards between the 2 enclosures only to find the problem moved with the board.
