Ci sono router Ethernet con una porta e con più porte e router ADSL con una porta e con più porte. I router Ethernet si collegano ad uno switch o ad un modem ADSL Ethernet, oppure anche all'HAG di FastWeb, mentre i router ADSL prendono Internet direttamente dal doppino telefonico (hanno, cioè, il modem ADSL integrato).
