Nexuiz è un arena shooter fast paced e competitivo, pensato esclusivamente per il multiplayer.
Sono previste due modalità di gioco, Team Deathmatch e Capture the Flag, entrambe 4 vs 4 giocatori.
La novità introdotta da questo gioco rispetto agli FPS old school che l'hanno preceduto è data dai mutatori, circa 100, da raccogliere ed attivare nel momento più opportuno:

Dynamic Mutators allow players to change the way Nexuiz plays in seconds, altering the battle arena in ways that can alter the outcome of a match. With 100 Dynamic Mutators and over 1.7 million combinations no two Nexuiz matches will ever be the same. There are five categories of Mutators: Everyone, Your Team, The Enemy Team, Yourself and WTF.

Ad esempio il mutatore Jetpacks consentirà ai giocatori di volare, Instagib renderà le armi in grado di uccidere con un colpo solo, Lead Flag rallenterà il portatore della bandiera avversario e così via.
