Se hai già XP tienilo ed aspetta Windows 7, se non hai un S.O. prendi Vista (XP è morto), nel tuo caso 32 o 64 cambia poco, direi 64bit più che altro perchè un S.O. dura più di un PC e senz'altro le applicazioni a 64bit aumenteranno.
