Well, first..
a Volume potentiometer has 3 terminals.
You would usually connect:
Terminal 1 and terminal 2 (center), to +12 VDC, yellow wire.
Terminal 3 to the fan +12 and the fan ground to the black wire, ground.
Remember that the Resistance and Wattage of the potentiometer is critical for this setup to function correctly.
