Faccio prima a copiare dall'help che a spiegartelo con parole mie:

maxstart.max: all'avvio e in caso di ripristino del software, 3ds max ricerca questo file nella directory \MaxStart specificata in Configura percorsi e se lo trova procede a caricarlo. Ciò consente di specificare lo stato di default dell'area di lavoro ogni volta che si avvia o si ripristina il programma. Ad esempio, se si usa sempre un piano terrestre, è possibile impostarlo come default creandone uno e poi salvarlo come maxstart.max. Se si salva un altro file su maxstart.max, è possibile ripristinare l'impostazione di default del programma eliminando il file maxstart.max, quindi ripristinando il programma.

maxstart.max: At startup and when you reset the program, 3ds max looks for this file in the \maxstart folder specified in Configure Paths, and if found, loads it. This allows you to specify the default state of the workspace whenever you start or reset the program. For example, if you always use a ground plane, you can make it the default setup by creating one, and then saving it as maxstart.max. If you save a different file over maxstart.max, you can return to program defaults by deleting the maxstart.max file, and then resetting the program.
