Microsoft Acquires Anti-Spyware Leader GIANT Company

New Offerings Will Help Customers Keep SpywareAnd Other Deceptive Software Off Their Computers

REDMOND, Wash. -- Dec. 16, 2004 -- Microsoft Corp. today announced that it has acquired GIANT Company Software Inc., a provider of top-rated anti-spyware and Internet security products. Microsoft will use intellectual property and technology assets from the acquisition to provide Microsoft® Windows® customers with new tools to help protect them from the threat of spyware and other deceptive software. In addition, key personnel from GIANT Company will be joining Microsoft's security efforts.

Quindi dopo l'acquisto del RAV (poco conosciuto ma eccellente antivirus), la microsoft ha acquistato anche il miglior antispyware in circolazione.
Evidentemente intende integrarli nel suo prossimo sistema operativo, per la gioia dell'antitrust:p

se sono moduli separati e in fase di installazione viene chiesto se installarli o meno l'antitrust non può fare nulla.

Sunbelt Software Distribution, un azienda che offre software antispyware "powered by" Giant, ha rivendicato la co-ownership del codice di Giant e ha reagito con entusiasmo alla notizia dell'acquisizione effettuata da Microsoft. Il colosso di Redmond però prende le distanze da Sunbelt rispondendo con un comunicato ufficiale. (News correlata -> Microsoft Compra Giant!)

Alex Eckelberry presidente di Sunbelt commenta l'acquisizione:
"This is fantastic news for us because we co-own the Giant code and all future definition updates"

Risponde Amy Carroll, director of product management in Microsoft's security business technology: "We understand that Giant granted a co-ownership right to Sunbelt concerning an earlier version of the product. [But] that right does not constrain either party from innovating and developing new products that are based on that earlier version"

Microsoft ha chiarito nel comunicato che detiene l'intera proprietà di ogni prodotto futuro basato sulla tecnologia antispyware di Giant che sarà. Nel rispetto degli accordi legali precedenti tra Giant e Sunbelt, Microsoft fornirà a Sunbelt le "antispyware signature updates" fino al Luglio 2007.

Altre indiscrezioni sul prossimo prodotto Microsoft:
Il prodotto dovrebbe essere gratuito solo durante la fase di beta test e probabilmente conterrà le tecnologie sia di Giant sia di GeCAD, una azienda anti-virus acquistata nel 2003.
