NVIDIA ha ufficialmente annunciato quest'oggi un nuovo standard per la grafica 3D nei notebook. MXM, questo il nome, è un'interfaccia che permette di collegare ad un notebook una scheda, sulla quali viene montata tutta l'interfaccia video del sistema. Alla base di MXM vi è la connessione PCI Express 16x, che viene utilizzata per collegare scheda madre del notebook e scheda del chip video. Oltre al segnale video via le 16 piste PCI Express, MXM gestisce contemporaneamente i segnali elettrici per LVDS, VGA, SDTV, HDTV e due connettori di output DVI indipendenti.

NVIDIA ha esposto specifiche per 3 differenti tiplogie di moduli MXM:

MXM-I: adatto a noteboob thin&light, utilizza moduli da 70x66 millimetri di dimensione;
MXM-II: per notebook mainstream, con schedina di dimensioni pari a 73x78 millimetri;
MXM-III: adatto ai notebook Desktop Replacement, permette l'utilizzo di bus memoria a 256bit di ampiezza e ha superficie complessiva di 80x100 millimetri.
Un elemento indubbiamente interessante dell'approccio di NVIDIA è dato dal fatto di essere uno standard aperto. Qualunque produttore, quindi, può costruire e immettere in commercio soluzioni video MXM. Un'interfaccia come quella MXM, inoltre, permette una notevole flessibilità ai produttori di notebook, in quanto con un unico design della scheda madre possono essere adattate differenti scelte per il sottosistema video, proponendo soluzioni dalle caratteristiche tecniche differenti perle fasce di prezzo più disparate.

Per gli acquirenti, uno standard come quello MXM permette di aggiornare il sottosistema video integrato nel proprio notebook, rendendo in teoria possibile anche lo switch da soluzioni video NVIDIA a quelle di altri produttori, qualora questi ultimi scelgano di presentare soluzioni MXM.
Pare a dire il vero abbastanza difficile che ATI possa presentare proprie soluzioni video basate su interfaccia MXM; è più realistico che il produttore canadese, nelle prossime settimane, possa presentare una propria soluzione che vanti le medesime caratteristiche di MXM.

NVIDIA prevede d'introdurre, a partire dalla seconda metà dell'anno, una completa famiglia di chip video per sistemi notebook basati su interfaccia MXM, indicate con il nome di GeForce 6 Go. Mancano al momento dettagli su questi chip video, ma è prevedibile che seguendo l'approccio introdotto con le schede NV40 anche queste nuove soluzioni video integrino tra le caratteristiche tecniche il supporto hardware agli Shader 3.0.

I primi notebook basati su tecnologia MXM verranno immessi nel mercato a partire dalla seconda metà del 2004. Tra i partner interessati al momento a questa tecnologia segnaliamo Asus, AOpen, Clevo, Arima e Quanta tra i più importanti.
