posso provare, mi si piantava da fat32 a fat32 e da fat32 a smb

cmq. indica chiaramente che è un problema di LETTURA

A questo punto penso sia un problema di disco, che dice smart?

Se l'hai gia' installato:
smartctl -a /dev/hdX
(devi mettere il device del disco)

Rifai la copia con linux, quando arriva all'errore controlla i messaggi del kernel (dmesg). Anzi meglio, scrivili su un file (dmesg > file.txt) e allegalo. Ho paura che ci troviamo una sorpresina.

l'hd è dentro a un pc hp non l'ho assemblato io

In realtà è un "errore 738" :D
Comunque se lo smart rileva errori di solito vuol dire che il disco fra un po' peggiorerà e fra un altro po' ti lascerà definitivamente :O
Ma il problema qual è? Se il pc è in garanzia fattelo cambiare, altrimenti metti in conto di prendere un altro hd

no, è un nuovo software della maxtor per il teletrasporto dei numeri seriali, risolve anche i guasti :O
