SuSE 9.1 LiveCD disponibile!

Oggi stavo girellando per l'FTP di SuSE quando mi sono imbattuto nella versione 9.1 LiveCD di SuSE che salvo sorprese dovrebbe essere quella ufficiale.

Ovviamente da buon amante della distro l'ho subito scaricata, masterizzata e provata.

Le mie impressioni:
Ancora piu' pulita e ordinata delle versioni precedenti, i comandi rispondono bene e tutto sembra molto reattivo pur essendo una distro da CD, non ho riscontrato alcun bug, caratteri antialiasing da tutte le parti konqueror compreso. Ottima l'integrazione con kwallet e col correttore ortografico di konqueror, inoltre sono gia' installati diversi plugin come Flash, Java e RealPlayer. Ma la cosa che piu' mi ha colpito finora, la vera perla, e' OpenOffice.org intergrato da SuSE in KDE, stesso tema, stesse icone e la possibilita' di aprire OOo come se fosse una parte di konqueror.
Per la cronaca OOo e' in versione 1.1.1, kde 3.2.1, kernel 2.6.4-52, Gimp 2.0.0.
Un'altra chicca e' il puntatore del mouse che in attesa che si apra una certa applicazione si trasforma nell'icona saltellante dell'applicazione stessa, divertente!

Le cose negative che finora ho potuto appurare sono che il liveCD e' in versione inglese e tedesca con le relative lingue e tastiere preimpostate, non e' presente un'icona scorciatoia alla shell, non e' partita la applet che mostra l'autonomia della batteria. Ovviamente sono tutte cose sistemabili velocemente ed intrinsicamente legate all'utilizzare il sistema da CD. Una cosa che mi ha scocciato e che e' presente anche nella versione 9.0 di SuSE e' il mancato riconoscimento al volo della rotellina del mouse....

Per quanto riguarda la velocita' complessiva del sistema non posso certo recensire nulla, vista la natura del medium impiegato, ma devo dire che il sistema sembra rispondere molto piu' prontamente rispetto alla versione col vecchio kernel.

Se volete sapere qualcosa di piu' chiedete pure oppure scaricatevi l'ISO da
ftp://sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/pub/Linux/suse/i386/live-cd-9.1
oppure da uno degli altri mirror di SuSE.

PS Non avevo ancora provato Konqueror in versione 3.2.1, le mie prime impressioni sono che si beve tranquillamente FireFox e compagnia in velocita' di rendering, stupefacente.

Scusa una domanda stupida ... hai usato nero per masterizzare l'immagine di Suse?

L'installazione prevede come per tutte le distro la creazione di 3 partizioni di boot, swap ed estesa?

C'è disk druid?

1) Non ho usato Nero (sotto Linux non c'è ;) ) ma penso che quest'ultimo vada benissimo visto che il file è una normalissima immagine cd .iso

2) La versione LiveCD non prevede installazione su Hard Disk, i programmi girano direttamente da CD e non è richiesta alcuna partizione dell'HD. Quest'ultimo non sarà per niente toccato, la liveCD è una versione di prova, metti dentro il cd, riavvii il pc e provi il sistema operativo senza rischiare nulla.
Ovviamente la velocità sarà scarsa visto che il cd è molto più lento dell'hd.... ma come ho detto serve solo per dare un'idea.

3) KDE è il desktop predefinito quindi è superbamente integrato ;)

Ma la version 9.0 dell'FTP si può scaricare e installare nonrmalmente da CD oppure no. Era mia intenzione scaricarla e installarla. Qualcuno mi sa dire com'è? Ha la veste grafica compresa o no?

non puoi installarla da CD.
Pero' ho trovato una guida che permette di creare un'iso da mettere su un DVD!
veramente comoda!

Non ho il masterizzatore per DVD :( ma postla ugualmente :)
Ma llora quello che c'è sul'FTP

non può essere scaricato e copiato su CD per poi inmstallare il tutto giusto?

la 9.1 non c'e' ancora completa, ci sono solo gli SRC.

comunque puoi fare in questo modo:
-> scarichi tutto, masterizzi il disco di boot, gli dici che vuoi installare da HD e gli dai il percorso dove hai scaricato i file, oppure puoi installarlo da FTP , se hai un altro pc in rete.

After publishing a guide to make a bootable SuSE-8.2-ftp-DVD using Linux OS, it is finally time to make one for Windows. Here it is, all you need to create a bootable SuSE 9.0 ftp-version DVD. Have fun!

Intro:
----------
Unfortunately, SuSE does not offer ISO-images of their Linux-distribution for download and they also claim, that it is not possible to make ISO-images of their ftp-version. This is not quite true as you can make a bootable DVD+R or DVD-R with all the contents of the ftp-version. This enables you to install the free version of SuSE Linux offline on any computer without the need for an internet connection. Please note, that only the ftp-version is completely licensed under GPL und SuSE YaST. You can do almost anything with this version as long as you make it available free of charge to others.

System requirements:
--------------------------
- Windows filesystem capable of storing files larger than 4 GB (NTFS!)
- fast connection to the Internet
- 10 GB free space on one of your drives

Software you need:
------------------------
- a good FTP-client to mirror the SuSE FTP-version to your local harddisk
- mkisofs for Windows: this is used to make the ISO-Image. It is part of the cdrecord for Windows package. Grab it from here:

- md5gui for windows: this is the Windows GUI to check all md5sums of the downloaded files. Grab it from here:

Phase 1: Mirror a complete SuSE 9.0 FTP tree
------------------------------------------------------
Visit the SuSE Mirror page to get the ftp-adress of a mirror close to you:
for international mirrors:

for german mirrors:
http://www.suse.de/de/private/download/ftp/inland.html

Start your favourite FTP-client and log into one of the mirrors. Change into the directory, where SuSE 9.0 for i386 is stored (usually: /suse/i386/9.0/) and verify that the directory is not empty. Tell your client to download the whole the complete 9.0-directory WITHOUT the subdirectory /suse/src, which is where the sources are stored!
If you get an error downloading a file called "packages.sk" with your ftp-client, try downloading it using your browser.

Phase 2: Verify MD5sums of your downloaded files
--------------------------------------------------------------
Start the md5gui-tool to verify the md5sums. Open the Windows-Explorer and locate the first file called "md5sums" (without any extension) in the root folder of your download. Click and drag it onto the MD5GUI-Window to have the tool verify your files. Repeat this for all md5sums-files in all subdirectories of your download. If any file other than the md5sums-file in the root folder of your download fails, then download those files again. SuSE should have excluded the md5sums-file in the root folder.

Phase 3: Build the ISO using mkisofs
-----------------------------------------------
To build the ISO-Image, extract all files of the cdrecord-zip-file to a directory (F:\Suse9\ for example). Place the downloaded tree of SuSE 9 in the following directory: F:\Suse9\suseftp\ and create the following directory to hold the iso: F:\Suse9\suseiso\

Make sure that the drive used to store the ISO is NTFS-formatted or supports files larger than 4 GB. If not you will get an error with mkisofs at around 99% done later (no free disk space, cannot write!).

In order to pass on all options to mkisofs, create a text file of the following and save it as mksuse9.bat in the same directory as mkisofs.exe. Make sure, everything is in one single line!:

Please do not change the following options:
-v starts mkisofs in verbose mode to give you more details on the process
-V sets the Volume-ID of the ISO to SU900FTP.001
-P sets the Publisher to SuSE Linux AG
-b sets the file to boot from to boot/loader/isolinux.bin
-c creates a boot catalog in boot/loader/boot.cat
-no-emul-boot sets boot mode to no-emulation

You should change the last two options according to your needs:
-o sets the output-file, use full path (here: F:\suse9\suseiso\SuSE-9.0-ftp.iso is used
F:\suse9\suseftp\ this is where the downloaded tree of Suse 9.0 can be found, use full path!

Open a command window in the directory that holds mksuse9.bat and mkisofs.exe and type "mksuse9" + Enter to run the batchfile.

Phase 4: Burn the ISO
----------------------------
Testburn the Iso with your favourite burning programm, for example Nero, on a rewriteable media (DVD+RW or DVD-RW). Try a testinstall and then burn the final ISO on a DVD+R or DVD-R!

Ascolta ma stavo guardando nell'FTP ma dove trovo tutti ivfile per creare il CD di boot, ho guardato ma non esiste una cartella con scritto folder of Boot Cd.
