As a result of an on-going legal dispute with another games developer, Epic Games has announced today that it has suspended sales of Unreal Tournament 2004, and are instead planning on releasing a 'limited' version of the game freely over the internet. Details of the legal dispute resulting in this shocking step by Epic are sketchy, however an anonymous source at Epic gave us a few informal comments on this matter last night:
It's with great sadness that I have to confirm that the rumors are true - as of today, we're suspending production of UT2004 while we clear up a bunch of legal crap that's going on here at Epic HQ.
While this is undoubtedly a great blow for the community, it's not all bad news, as our source goes on to reveal.
Due to the nature of the dispute, we've decided to release a limited version of UT2004 onto the internet for the timebeing until all this is sorted out. The limited version of the game includes all of the UT2004 content, with the exception of the Onslaught gametype, which we were unable to include for legal reasons. This 'Limited Edition' of UT2004 will be available shortly on the official UT2004 site and other leading games sites.
Our download monkeys spent last night getting the file mirrored and ready for you, and so you can download it from BeyondUnreal FileWorks using the link below:
