I Have a Sound Fix for those using Sound Blaster Cards

The lack of speech playback in NOLF2 annoyed me enough to use my 10+ years experience as a Tech Support person in New Zealand to find a solution. After reading the forums and discovering that the problem could be related to the audio codecs. (Specifically the Mp3 codecs) I started to anaylise the different codecs that were installed on my PC and discovered that their could be a couple of reasons why the NOLF2 speech wouldn't work.

1) If you have Creative Playcenter installed it will also install it's own Mp3 codec (ctmp3.acm). (a crap codec I might add) Disable this codec in the sound options in your control panel and un-install Creative Playcenter. reboot and test NOLF2.

2)Under Windows 9x/ME: Make sure that L3codeca.acm is in the System Directory (C:\Windows\System). Add the string in your System.ini - Section drivers32: msacm.l3acm=l3codeca.acm.

Under Windows 2000/XP: Make sure that L3codeca.acm in the System Directory (C:\Windows\System32). (c:\winnt\system32 for Win2000) Launch regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32, then change the key with the name msacm.l3acm and update the value to L3codeca.acm

This worked for me! ... give it a try and PLEASE be very careful when modifying both the system.ini under 9x/ME and the registry under 2000/XP.

Cheers

Matt

I was having the same sound problems as the rest. I found that a Divx player had replaced my original Fraunhofer codec with its own, on my Windows XP system. After removing that one and putting back the original (l3codeca.acm) in the windows/system32 folder the game sounds now work perfectly. Hope this helps

I finally fixed the issue with NOLF 2 demo. Somewhere along the line I had put in a codec called l3codecp.acm. I had tried something someone was trying to do in enabling Media Player to play MP3s. I never did get it to work but left the codec in. It also uses the fraunhofer codec. Well with this in, that WFMADist.exe in Nolf 2 would not overwrite it. It uses the slightly different l3codeca.acm. I think they must be using two different version of the Fraunhofer or something. Well I finally just completely took out the l3codecp.acm from the system32 folder and registry, and installed the WFMADist.exe again and now NOLF 2 sound works as it should. Somehow the l3codecp.acm was conflicting with the l3codeca.acm and I guess NOLF 2 demo was using the wrong one

At first, i had only background, fx but no speech. I uninstalled the Nimo Codec. Now, there was only background music, no fx. Now i downloaded the Nimo pack and installed the Fraunhofer MP3 codec. Sound was back, still no speech. Now i downloaded the official NOLF2 audio patch. No result. After this i renamed the l3codeca.acm to .old and reinstalled WMFADIST.EXE from the NOLF2 cd's. Now everything is fine. I didn't supress any codec's, i have all kinds of audiocodecs installed.

Hope this helps.
