Dell may launch Centrino notebooks as US$1,100-1,200 in May, sources say

Dell Computer's new Centrino-based Inspiron 500m and Latitude D500 notebooks, expected to be launched in May, may retail for low as US$1,100 to US$1,200, according to sources.
These two-spindle notebooks, featuring 855GM chipsets, may even see prices fall as low as US$1,000, sources added. Dell is retailing its current Centrino-based Inspiron 600m and Latitude D600 notebooks (featuring 855PM chipsets) at starting prices of US$1,299 to US$1,399.
Some PC makers here believe that Dell is using a low-price strategy to drive the replacement of all notebook product lines with Centrino notebooks no later than the third quarter. Moving full-speed forward with the Centrino-based Latitude D series, Dell will stop supplying the non-Centrino-based Latitude C series notebooks in September, sources said.
Dell is also said to be launching two slim-type Centrino notebooks - the Latitude D400 and the Latitude X300 - which both feature 12.1-inch TFT LCD panels. According to sources, the Latitude D400 model will debut in the May-June period and will be made by Taiwan's Wistron. The Latitude X300, set to roll out in the third quarter, will be made by South Korea's Samsung Electronics, sources said.
These two notebooks will replace the non-Centrino-based Latitude C400 and Latitude X200.
Meanwhile, Taiwan's Quanta Computer and Compal Electronics are said to be speeding up production to ship a combined 70,000 to 80,000 units in April for Dell's first Centrino-based notebooks - the Inspiron 600m, Latitude D600 and Latitude D800.
The Inspiron 600m and Latitude D600 will be made by Quanta while the Latitude D800 will be made by Compal, sources indicated.
