box eSATA per RAID e multiport eSATA

Mi piacerebbe mettere su un sistema RAID esterno al PC. Non mi interessa piu' di tanto andare sui NAS (anche se i Qnap sarebbero i migliori, ma costicchiano), ma mi basterebbe avere un box esterno da collegare come eSATA che pero' possa montare 2 o 4 HD da mettere in RAID1.

E' possibile la cosa?
Ho letto che qualche box esterno richiede multiport eSATA. Che e' 'sta roba? come faccio a sapere se la MB supporta il il multiport eSATA? (Asus CrossHair III)

Ho trovato Fantec e Vantec che potrebbero avere dei modelli interessanti, ma vorrei avere delle opinioni da parte di chi, magari, ha gia' provato :D
