I too have tried and tried to like cleartype but I can't take it...too blurry. I like seeing each and every pixel in fonts and not the red and blue sub-pixels around fonts making them look slightly gray. Cleartype and every font anti-aliasing looks hideous. Just bring on the 300DPI monitors already and have it over with; enough of these work arounds.

In the mean time here is what I do.

Turn off clear type in control panel. But, turning off cleartype leaves the default SegoeUI font looking terrible. To counteract this I have had to reg hack HLKM\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Fonts changing all the SegoeUI fonts to blank. Then change HKLM\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\Current Version\\Font Substitutes\\Segoe UI to equal Tahoma (or font of your choice). Update your theme with Tahoma everywhere (or your preferred font). After reboot this leaves it looking better than leaving Segoe UI in its place. However anything that is WPF rendered will not change with Aero enabled. The classic theme will use Tahoma everywhere.

For Office 2007 and newer products you have to do the same process for Calibri and Consolas. Hope that helps. I really wish MS provided a way to easily and completely turn off Cleartype. Not asking it be removed but at least give me the option to turn it off.

CPL\\System\\Performance Information and Tools\\Adjust Visual Effects [sidebar], uncheck "Smooth edges of screen fonts".
