SUN VALLEY - L'attacco al cuore di Microsoft è stato lanciato: Google ha appena annunciato la nascita di un suo sistema operativo, diretto concorrente del dominatore Windows. Il Google Chrome OS, questo il nome del prodotto, sarà open source (cioè liberamente modificabile dagli utenti) e farà la sua comparsa su alcuni modelli di computer portatili nella seconda metà del 2010.

E così, dopo essersi messa in diretta concorrenza con Microsoft Office e Internet Explorer, lanciando propri programmi per la videscrittura, il calcolo, la navigazione in rete, Google ora tenta di colpire il gigante di Redmond dove fa più male: nel campo dei sistemi operativi per personal computer, dove Windows regna praticamente incontrastato da decenni.

Secondo quanto annunciato da Google sul suo blog ufficiale, Chrome OS sarà pensato per un nuovo tipo di panorama informatico, nel quale i computer sono sempre più rivolti a internet. In questo senso sarà la naturale estensione di Google Docs (la suite di software online per l'ufficio) e del browser Google Chrome. "Gli attuali sistemi operativi sono stati disegnati in un'era nella quale non c'era il web", spiega Sundar Pichai, VP Product Management and Linus Upson, Engineering Director di Google. "Il nuovo sistema operativo dovrà essere veloce e leggero, dovrà avviarsi e portarti in rete in pochi secondi". Per questo, i primi computer a dotarsi del Google Chrome OS saranno i netbook, i piccoli portatili di ultima generazione pensati per gli utenti che hanno bisogno di lavorare e accedere a internet in mobilità.

Google era già presente nei sistemi operativi con Android, il suo prodotto per i cellulari. Chrome OS, che avrà un cuore Linux, potrà essere usato tanto sui portatili che sui computer desktop più potenti. A maggio 2009, secondo i dati forniti da NetApplications, Windows era presente in oltre l'87 per cento dei pc. Al momento, il concorrente più significativo è il Mac OS X, con il 9,8 per cento. I vari sistemi operativi Linux si dividono attualmente circa l'1 per cento del mercato.

Introducing the Google Chrome OS

It's been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.

We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear — computers need to get better. People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they don't want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates. And any time our users have a better computing experience, Google benefits as well by having happier users who are more likely to spend time on the Internet.

We have a lot of work to do, and we're definitely going to need a lot of help from the open source community to accomplish this vision. We're excited for what's to come and we hope you are too. Stay tuned for more updates in the fall and have a great summer.

Ottimo, letto anch'io poco fa la notizia speriamo bene.
Da quanto si dice google introdurrà nel mercato un sistema operativo basato su linux e opensource per il 2010 putroppo però sembra essere destinato ai netbook (processore atom, ram 2/4gb... scheda video... lol ) per cui spero che nei prossimi mesi arrivi quacosa di più serio anche per i notebook e per i desktop. Fino a quel momento il so targato goole rimarrà un bel giocattolino.

Inoltre non ho letto i dettagli sulla compatibilità con le applicazioni windows...

girando su kernel linux, l'unica compatibilità sarà quella fornita da Wine

è una bella notizia, perchè porterà finalmente linux ad un market share (è un sistema molto ben fatto, si merità sicuramente di più che adesso) più alto, ma non condivido affatto la visione di google di OS, i miei dati e le mie applicazioni devono rimanere sul mio computer e io, esclusivamente, devo averne il controllo

qualcuno che ne capisce più di me può dirmi il senso di questo OS? nn si ottiene un risultat uguale e superiore usando una qualsiasi distro linux e mettendoci chrome? L'unico vantaggio potrebbe essere quello di girare velocemente anche su sistemi super scarsi....ma ci sn già distro per questo scopo!
Proprio nn capisco che successo potrebbe avere per la massa un sistema operativo basato sulle web apps! Mha......
Speriamo almeno che in questo modo i vari produttori miglioreranno il supporto hardware per linux!

Ah certo che se ci lamentiamo di windows per la sua scarsa sicurezza e configurabilità e poi andiamo a usare un OS che consente solo l'uso di web apps.......

io non ho capito una cosa.. perché quel nome? nel senso chrome è il browser di google quindi mi sembrava più sensato un nome legato ad Android, qualcosa tipo "Android OS " o "Android Desktop" piuttosto che "Google Chrome OS" :mbe: .

secondo me verrà fuori un sistema "ibrido" che punterà tutto sui servizi google, magari rendendoli disponibili anche offline, una sorta di sistema operativo che funge da client per i servizi google.

Non si chiama Android OS perché sono due progetti separati, e il primo è soltanto finanziato da google.

il successo è abbastanza scontato visto che c'è di mezzo google.

l'interesse di google sta nel prendersi tutto il mercato facendo utilizzare la sua mail, il suo browser, le sue suite office etc...

Google potrebbe essere il catalizzatore per una distribuzione linux universale, la dove ubuntu ha fallito (ha fallito? mi sa di si).
