Salve, potete dare un'occhiata a questo breve testo che ho scritto sul famoso romanzo di Stevenson? Grazie
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Setting
The story is one year and three months long and takes place in the XIX century.
Plot
Mr Utterson, a famous lawyer, is taking a walk in the street with his cousin Mr Enfield, when they stop in front of a sinister block of building. The door of that building reminds Mr Enfield a very odd story about a cruel man named Mr. Hyde.
This strange story shakes Mr Utterson, since he knows that, according to Dr Jekyll’s will, in case of decease of his dear friend Dr. Jekyll, a very good and respected scientist, all his possessions are to pass into the hands of Edward Hyde. Utterson, suspecting that Hyde blackmails Dr. Jekyll, decides to investigate. He finds out that Mr. Hyde is a narrow-minded and cruel person so he decides to meet his friend Dr. Jekyll, who reassures Utterson about everything. One year later, an important man, Sir Carew is murdered and Mr Hyde is charged with murder. Utterson asks Jekyll about Hyde and the doctor assures that he will never more hear a word about him. Dr. Jekyll withdraws into himself so one day his butler Pool, worried about his master, calls Mr. Utterson. They break down the door of Dr. Jekyll’s room and find the corpse of Hyde with Dr. Jekyll’s clothes. They find a message written by the doctor. Thanks to this message Mr. Utterson understands that Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are the same person, since he had succeeded in finding a potion which was able to isolate one’s devil part, changing physical aspect too. Because of his devil part, the person of Mr. Hyde, was becoming more and more powerful, doctor Jekyll was no longer able to control oneself and so he preferred to commit suicide.
Main characters
Mr. Hyde
He is small and there is something wrong with his appearance, displeasing and detestable. He gives a strong feeling of deformity, although you couldn’t understand the reason and he has a displeasing smile. He has a remarkable combination of great muscular activity and great apparent debility of constitution. He is the evil and damnable personality of Dr. Jekyll. He is full of rage and cruel. In early moments doctor Jekyll uses it to enjoy bad experiences and pleasures and Mr. Hyde becomes more and more powerful and Jekyll is no longer able to dominate him.
Dr. Jekyll
He is a respected scientist, he is a large, well-made, smooth-faced man of fifty, with something of a slyish cast but with every mark of capacity and kindness. He is good, generous and religious but his curiosity for human psychology will destroy him, freeing his evil part.
Mr. Utterson
He a lawyer and a good friend of Dr. Jekyll. Kind, temperate and helpful he tries to help Dr. Jekyll.
Pool
He is Dr. Jekyll’s faithful butler who has worked for him for 20 years.
Theme(s) + message
The most important theme is the double and the inner conflict of humanity’s sense of good and evil. The good person, Dr. Jekyll, is always in conflict with his inner evil part, Mr. Hyde although at first he is attracted by the advantages of his double life.
Many critics have found the most different messages in this novel. A very curious interpretation explains that the novel is a critique against the alcoholism (in fact the potion of Dr. Jekyll could be simply changed with wines and spirit), very common at that times in the UK.
Would you recommend this book? Why/why not?
Yes, I would recommend this book because it’s really full of suspense and explores inner human conscience divided in evil part and good one.
