August 13, 2008 - Publisher Codemasters on Wednesday revealed to IGN that is planning to release a new take on its popular Overlord franchise exclusively for Wii. The title, built from the ground up for Nintendo's system by Climax Studios, is called Overlord Dark Legend and is set for a 2009 release. Players control a young, new Overlord as he takes control of his evil minions. The "trainee tyrant" will, according to Codemasters, "be able to take his growing pains out on the local fairy tale inhabitants as he protects his castle and lands."
Dark Legend will feature an original tongue-in-cheek storyline penned by award-winning games author Rhianna Pratchett, and is set to include a host of old and new franchise-favorite characters, including Halflings, trolls, elves and dwarves, as well as new wicked witches, gingerbread men, and Lil' Red Riding Hood, "the seeming sweet girl with a very personal lupine secret."
The Overlord franchise sparked to life on Xbox 360 in 2007 and immediately drew comparisons to Nintendo's own Pikmin because the main character, although very different from Captain Olimar, controlled his squad of minions around the world very similarly to the way Olimar did the Pikmin. Players used the second analog stick to move the Minions about like a wave.
Of course, Overlord Dark Legend will make full use of the Wii remote to further enhance the experience. According to Codemasters, the Wii remote enables "unprecedented control over the minions." Using the controller, gamers can pluck a minion from the horde, hold him by the neck and shake him around, "throttled to imbue him with some Overlordly power and turn him into a manic minion missile." Now charged with an explosive body, the in devilish critter can be guided into enemies with "hilarious, if rather fatal, consequences."
Overlord Dark Legend sounds very promising to us. For more details, we chatted with Codemasters' Dean Scott, who is serving as associate producer on the project. Here's what he had to say:
IGN: Will Overlord Dark Legend be a port or an all-new game for Wii?
Dean Scott: It's an all new game, designed especially for Wii. New story, new characters, new gameplay. It doesn't make sense to try and port the old version, when the Wii gives you an opportunity to make something that works very differently. The key difference is in how you play it. You point, and the minions go and break and kill things. It's a very literal connection for the player.
IGN: How is Overlord Dark Legend related to the first Overlord game?
Dean Scott: There are lots of subtle connections for Overlord-savvy gamers, but in the lineage of the series the events take place before the original game. So certain things you do set up events featured in the other games. It's not the same Overlord though. We're setting up the idea that there have been a series of Overlords throughout time.
IGN: What can you tell us about the story?
Dean Scott: It's part fairy tale, part classic fantasy, and all hilarious. Obviously we've twisted the fairy tale stuff around, because it wouldn't be an Overlord game without a load of black humor. So instead of helping Little Red Riding Hood find her grandma, you'd be helping the wolf shop for granny-friendly sauces. That's not actually in the game, but you get the idea.
IGN: Any new minions?
Dean Scott: It's the same four minion types, but we've given them new abilities. Some of these may be themed around bodily functions that childish folk like us find hilarious. We'll be revealing more from GC Leipzig.

Fact sheet:
Designed and developed exclusively for Wii, Overlord Dark Legend is a brand new action adventure steeped in fairy tale lore with sinister, satirical twists. Set in a time before the original game (Overlord, 2007), players step into the role of a new younger Overlord and revel in command of the most vicious, yet lovable little critters in gaming – the Minions.
Forming a unique rampaging army, the Minions are a slavish and loyal horde of gremlin-esque critters predisposed to violence. No matter: they’re always ready and willing to follow even the most suicidal order, whether it’s raiding villages for kicks and giggles or hurling themselves at enemies in the face of kamikaze odds in the beautifully rendered game world. With a story and characters that poke playful fun at fantasy cliché, our trainee tyrant will be able to take his growing pains out on the local fairy tale inhabitants as he protects his castle and lands.
Seize the Power: Donning the armour of the Overlord, players become commander-in-chief of a fighting, thieving and pillaging horde of crazed minions (with hundreds more waiting in reserve) – a force quite unlike any other. Send out your minions to crush rock giants, gnomes, halflings, elves, dwarves, peasants and more. Become a new Overlord, conquer realms and grow your castle from dilapidated ruins to glorious expression of your absolute power
Pillage and destroy with the Wii Remote: Controlling the minions is slick and devastating, requiring a flick of the Wii Remote to send the raucous rabble into battle. Whether you’re swishing the remote to sweep the horde into battle or pointing it to direct magic spells and fireballs at enemies, the Wii Remote becomes the perfect extension of the Overlord’s despotic will.
Throttle Your Minions: Individual Minions can be plucked from the horde, held by the neck and then, by vigorously shaking the Wii Remote, throttled! This stirs up the volatile lifeforce within them and they become a manic minion missile. With a now-explosive body, the insane little critter can be guided into enemies with hilarious, if rather fatal, consequences for both parties.
A twisted fairy tale: With a rich, tongue-in-cheek story written by award-winning games author Rhianna Pratchett, this exclusive Overlord adventure for Wii tells a new and twisted fairy tale. The lead character is in a Cinderella scenario with his elder and rather unpleasant brother and sister. He is the forgotten child while his father is away, and his wicked twin siblings are plotting to take over the kingdom with their own perverse alliances with elves and dwarves. The story game also introduces wicked witches, gingerbread men and Lil’ Red Riding Hood, the seeming sweet girl with a lupine side to her personality.
Meet the Minions: The Brown Minions are the fighters and the strongest minions in general combat. Red Minions are fire throwers and act like archers by hurling blazing fireballs as a long range attack. Green Minions are the Assassins and love to use stealth attacks. Blue Minions are the smartest of the minions and have healing powers and can resurrect their fallen minion comrades and bring them back into the fight.

non pare niente male :)
e la grafica pare pure buona sisi
La grafica non mi pare male. Ottimo.
Actually, when we say it looks very similar to its Xbox 360 we mean it literally. On firing up the demo, Dark Legend's title screen featured a background FMV of fly-bys and cut-scenes which we assumed had been culled from the original game. It quickly became apparent though that these scenes had been taken straight form this Wii version, its in-game engine offering some truly stunning visuals that really haven't been done justice by the first batch of Dark Legend screenshots.

- No sex or alcohol references
Come sarebbe a dire?
- 12-14 hours of playtime with lots of replayability
Ci ho messo qualcosa come 30 ore, mi sembra.

There's always the temptation with Wii games to stick big heads in, cel-shade it, and make it a mini-game collection. But we wanted to make a hardcore Overlord game. We weren't going to sell out what made the first game cool because there is this perceived wisdom of what Wii gamers want. I'm a Wii gamer: I don't want Wii Sports again. I've got that. It was with the console. I want something new and interesting, and something that's going to appeal to me as a gamer. And I don't think I'm alone in that. I hope I'm not anyway.
Non preoccuparti, non lo sei.
Overlord Dark Legend looks amazing. When people see this game in motion, they are going to be seriously impressed. It sounds like such a lame cliché to say "it looks like the 360 version", but that's true. Not exactly, but it's closer than we ever imagined possible on the platform. Quote me, and hold me up to internet ridicule if that's not the case. Of course we've made some changes to get that level of fidelity on the Wii, but the guys at Climax have been very clever with it. In terms of looks, it blows away just about everything else I've seen on Wii.
Overlord is not Wii Sports. This is not a game you're sitting down to play with your grandmother. Like I was saying earlier, making Overlord Party wasn't what we were trying to do. We haven't dumbed any part of the game down to pander to this perceived idea of a legion of idiot gamers that can't handle anything more serious than shaking a remote and pressing one button as the game plays itself.
Se sarà vero, sono seriamente colpito.
No, we were focused on delivering a compelling single-player game. I'm not having a go at VideoGamer.com here - it's a fun website read by winners - I'm having a go at stereotypes. DAMN YOU, STEREOTYPES! A game can be single-player only and be good on the Wii.

Using the Wiimote as a cursor, you sweep your gang of four different colours of minions into the fray, while controlling the Overlord on the nunchuk. It looks to be a very sensible application of the Wii's main strengths: the ability to point independently of your movement.
there appears to be a greater focus on the Overlord's own magical abilities in this incarnation, with quite an impressive arsenal of spells to fire with the Wiimote when you're not guiding the minions' antics. There's also the aforementioned minion exploding, which is achieved by grabbing them around the throat and throttling them until the point where they are ready to burst. Burst they do.
The most remarkable thing to report is just how extraordinary it looks. Considering Nintendo's first-party releases as the only measure of a target to beat, Climax has squeezed incredible detail out of the limited tech.
both games seem to have far more spark in them than the usual Nintendo console "quick, make a port" knock-offs, with the Wii game's ambitions set especially high.
