Italy's voters appear to have done more than just shift the country to the right. They have simplified enormously the political scene, making Italy’s parliament look more like Britain's: two big parties with a scattering of less important smaller ones. This could be an important element of stability for the future.

The question left by the vote is whether Mr Berlusconi will exploit the solid mandate he has received to introduce reforms that Italy so badly needs. He promised he would. But then he has promised much in the past that he has failed to deliver.
