The historic Eisenhower Executive Office Building next door to the White House caught fire this morning, and D.C. firefighters responded en masse to fight the blaze.
Firefighters could be seen breaking out windows in the building, formerly known as the Old Executive Office Building. Employees were ordered out of the building, but a White House spokesman said the White House itself was not evacuated.
D.C. fire department spokesman Alan Etter told CNN the blaze appeared to have started on the third floor of the building, perhaps in an electrical closet.
Heavy smoke could be seen billowing from the second and third floors, and water poured from some windows as fire fighters worked to extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported, Etter said.
The building, with an exterior of granite, slate and cast iron, was build in the French Second Empire style, between 1871 and 1888 and designed by Supervising Architect of the Treasury Alfred Mullett, according to the White House Web site.
The building originally housed the State, War and Navy Departments, and today houses the majority of the White House staff, including aides to the vice president, the Office of Management and Budget and the National Security Council.
There has been construction going on in the building recently. It was not immediately know whether the fire could have been related to the construction or came from some other cause.
