Ho un notebook toshiba con installato ubuntu 7.10 desktop alternate.
Grazie al gestore driver con restrizioni, ho abilitato il modem.
Dopo aver dato i comandi nella riga di comando sudo apt-get update e sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp, ho configurato gnome-ppp, interrogando il modem che automaticamente ha trovato il dispositivo in /dev/ttySL0.
Ho inserito il numero di connessione 7020187187, e telecom nei campi user e password.
Ip dinamico. Dns automatico.
Ecco il risultato dei log del modem:

Qua si va a scavare nei meandri della memoria, quando ci si collegava alle bbs e ai primi provider circa 12/13 anni fa... :D

Il problema mi sembra che sia chiaro, "NO DIALTONE".
Il problema dovrebbe stare nella stringa che passi prima del numero, nel tuo caso "ATM1L3DT", solo che mi sembra a "posto", perlomeno ci sono i comandi ATDT, il resto (M1L3) sta per?

Comunque da quel che ho scritto volevo anche far intendere che ho configurato poche cose (completati i campi del gnome-ppp riferiti al numero telefonico, user e passord), conseguentemente le stringhe e ogni altra cosa son venute da sè (by ubuntu)... Spero di essermi spiegato.
Quindi grazie per l'attenzione al mio post, ma non so dirti il significato di tutta la stringa. La gara alla scoperta della soluzione è ancora aperta :Prrr:

Cosí a naso il problema sta nella stringa che passi prima del numero, ATDT vuol dire "usa il dial tone" ma anche gli altri caratteri hanno un significato preciso. Devi trovare una legenda dei comandi AT e fare delle prove. La prima che farei é scrivere ATDT tutto attaccato e poi il numero da chiamare, senza altre stringhe.

Hai provato a cambiare alcune impostazioni di Gnome-ppp? Tipo "Ignora le stringhe da terminale" o "Utilizza modalità stupida", "Attendi il segnale di linea", ecc? Prova a modificarle una per volta e riprova! :)

Spero ci sia solo da puntare/spuntare funzioni nella configurazione di gnome-ppp, e nulla di particolarmente complesso.:Prrr:

Ciao e scusate se mi intrometto.
Anche io ho problemi a connettermi con teleconomy e sono proprio agli inizi con Linux, quindi ho usato ScanModem per avere qualche informazione sul tipo di Modem che monta il mio Laptop (ASUS L3350M):

Quindi un “Low level” driver snd-intel8x0m (ALSA) che dovrebbe essere affiancato da un slmodemd.gcc4.2 da compilare con ALSA support option.

Tra l'altro il modem non emette alcun segnale acustico, come invece succede se lo lancio con windows.

Ha questo punto ho cercato di fare delle prove apportando delle variazioni a wvdial.conf, soprattutto sulla stringa Init2:
Aggiungendo X3 dopo E1, oppure ATX3 e togliento Init3, oppure cambiando +FCLASS=0 con +MS=34 oppure +MS=90.
Purtroppo quando lancio wvdial ottengo sempre lo stesso messaggio:
Sending: ATDT7020187187
Waiting for carrier.
Timed out while dialing. Trying again

A questo punto non so veramente più cosa fare pertando ho pensato di aprire questo post con la speranza di trovare un aiuto.
