SEPANG, 21 June 2007 – AirAsia X is pleased to announce the appointment of of Dato' Kalimullah Bin Masherul as the new Chairman of FAX effective 11th June 2007.
Dato' Kamarudin Meranun, co founder and director of Fly Asian Xpress Sdn Bhd (FAX), the operating company for the new long haul low cost airline, AirAsia X announced the appointment of Dato' Kalimullah Bin Masherul as the new Chairman of FAX.
FAX had also earlier announced the appointment of its new Chief Executive Officer, Azran Osman-Rani effective from 2 July 2007. Dato’ Tony Fernandes, Dato’ Kamarudin Meranun and Raja Azmi are now directors of FAX.
“The timing is appropriate: AirAsia X has secured 15 firm orders of Airbus A330-300 aircraft with options to purchase additional 10 aircraft and we have selected Rolls-Royce Trent 700 as the engines for the aircraft on 20th June 2007. Furthermore, the routes offering have been narrow down to United Kingdom, Australia and China. The commercial launch is due to commence in August with the inaugural flight set to take off in September 2007. The transfer of rural air services from FAX to Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has been agreed by the government and the handover process should be completed soon,” Dato' Kamarudin Meranun said.
With all this in place, Malaysia now has a full low cost strategy driven by two separate companies which are independently run. AirAsia will remain focused on short haul routes and AirAsia X will focus on routes more than 4 hrs. Both these operations are set to elevate Malaysia as the pre-eminent low cost hub in this region.
