THE FBI IS visiting the nation's top technical universities in a bid to stop students taking their holidays outside the country.

MIT, Boston College, and the University of Massachusetts, have all had a visit from the spooks to warn them about the dangers of foreign spies and terrorists stealing sensitive academic research.

The FBI wants the universities to impose rules that will stop US university students from working late at the campus, travelling abroad, showing an interest in their colleagues' work, or have friends outside the United States, engaging in independent research, or making extra money without the prior consent of the authorities.

The rules are part of guidelines given to administrators by the FBI.

The Feds are convinced that if you are doing any of these things you are likely to be a foreign agent who is nicking technology for foreign powers.

Following rules which have been abandoned in Eastern Europe, faculty, staff and students are encouraged to spy on their colleagues for signs of suspicious behaviour and report any concerns to the FBI or the military.

non è una balla, anche i ricercatori usa sono controllati dal governo americano e i ricercatori militari non possono andare all' estero a farsi le vacanze.
il caso era scoppiato qualche anno fa quando fu arrestato un militare alle haway che passava informazioni sul b2 ai russi

BOSTON -- The head of the FBI's Boston office is warning the region's top universities to be on the lookout for foreign spies or potential terrorists who might be trying to steal unclassified, yet sensitive, research.

FBI agents met recently with officials at Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Massachusetts and other schools to train professors, students and security staff on how to recognize anyone who might be trying to exploit research, Special Agent in Charge Warren Bamford said.

More visits are scheduled as part of a larger nationwide program, he said.

Bamford stressed that the FBI is not seeking to censor information or stop the free flow of information, just raise awareness.

"The academic community is designed to be open, and we just have to make the community aware," he said.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute President Dennis Berkey said the FBI told researchers to protect laptops, especially in foreign countries, and to be wary about who contacts them about their work.

"The general point was, if there is unnatural or unexplained interest in your research and you're nervous about it, here's how to be in touch with us," Berkey said. He said WPI already takes precautions to protect research.

Boston College will probably follow some of the FBI's advice, spokesman Kevin Shea said.

"Boston College was very appreciative of their outreach," Shea said.

John Reinstein, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, expressed reservations about the program, warning that there could be a chilling effect on students or researchers.

"Are you going to ask all the questions you want to ask if someone is out there taking notes and reporting to the FBI that you asked the question which they perceived as suspicious?" Reinstein said.

Scusa ma non vedo il nesso: un militare che lavora sugli aerei spia è un conto e capisco che possano temere fughe di notizie di importanza nazionale, ma studenti e ricercatori universitari "qualsiasi"...

O forse non gli viene impedito, ma sono semplicemente stati avvertiti i possessori di ricerche o altro materiale riservato di stare attenti a chi si ha davanti e di proteggere i loro lavori.

non sono ricercatori qualsiasi quelli che lavorano al mit, fanno ricerca al massimo livello che alcune troveranno impiego fra 30 anni o forse più è quello il reale potere dell' america la ricerca scientifica, se perdono quella non hanno più nulla
