Sony's semi official blog 'Threespeech' has confirmed that European PS3's will have the emotion engine removed from the system, but will retain the graphics chip impacting upon the number of PS2 titles that will be backwards compatible. You'll be able to tell the difference in systems, via the PAL logo and the following serial numbers.

The original PS3 used the Emotion Engine/Graphics Synthesiser to emulate PS2 titles. With the latest European specification we have removed the Emotion Engine, retaining the graphics chip. This has an impact on the number of PS2 titles that will be backwards compatible.
L'Emotion Engine verrà rimosso dalle console europee mantenendo però il Graphics Synthesizer. Questo avrà un impatto sul numero di titoli che saranno retrocompatibili.
