Salve a tutti,

Grazie, ciao

would be to:

Start\Run and type: %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

You then execute the instructions on the screen to Restore your computer to an earlier possible working state, before the problem appeared.

If do not have a Restore point, you could try to run the sfc /scannow command.

Would it be the ScanDisk command?

you could revert to an earlier working condition by booting your computer in Safe Mode (pressing F8 at startup), and selecting Last Known Good Configuration.

The sfc (system file checker) commands, are executed from the Run box to make sure that important system files are not corrupted or modified. You may need the original WinXP installation CD if the files are corrupted on the hard disk.

If the problem is so sporadic, are you sure that the PC is free from any malwares\spywares\viruses?

Windows XP does not have the ScanDisk utility but instead it has Chkdsk and should be executed from the Recovery Console.

I just wanted to ask you if it was possible the problem to be caused by spywares, since I have just two days ago found out 17 spywares on my pc...! And I didn't know anything about... They were then just 15 (13 of them were "cookie spywares", so not very dangerous and easy to find and delete, while the other "supposed" 4 were not, and they were instead quite dangerous) since the program that told me they were 17 wasn't a freeware one, I've found and delete all the 15 (13 cookies and 2 dangerous) other spywares but even if I've been scanning my pc all the day with all the most famous and well known antivirus (freeware and not, just to eventually see the report), no one of them has been able to find those remaining 2...I didn't understand why, then experts told me those 2 were probably fake positive (to convince me I needed that program to delete those 2 spyware and that program was the only one to detect them, that means that was also the best one, so I would have bought it...90 euros...) while they there were not...So, by the truth I had only 15 spywares (not 17 like that expensive and useless ( :D ) program was trying to make me believe...And I deleted them all. It's been just 2 days ago so I can't tell if the reason why of my problem were the spywares. Anyway: is it possible?
Could you explane me better how to perform the sfc/scannow???

PS: Windows XP has the ScanDisk utility, I don't know how to explane you in English, since I don't know the command-names on the English Windows XP version... I'll tell you in Italian: right-clic on Disco locale ( C: ), Proprietà, Strumenti and ScanDisk. When you clic it, it tells you it can't perform the ScanDisk immediately and it will ask you if you want to program it for the next boot...

The problem was surely because of the spywares... Since I deleted them my pc hasn't stopped on the account selection screen anymore... Thank you for your help, it's been precious to me...

does NOT have natively the ScanDisk utility, it has the Chkdsk utility only. You could download a copy of ScanDisk and execute it from a floppy disk or copy it on the hard drive and execute it from there. But it is not necessary.

Here is how you scan your drives without entering the Recovery Console.
