Boeing Airborne Laser Team Rolls Out Modified Aircraft and Prepares for Flight Tests

ST. LOUIS --- The Boeing Company along with industry teammates and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, rolled out the Airborne Laser (ABL) aircraft today from a modification facility in Wichita, Kan., during a ceremony marking major program achievements on several fronts.

Boeing presented the aircraft to a crowd of hundreds of government customers, industry partners and Boeing employees gathered at its Integrated Defense Systems facilities in Wichita.

The ceremony highlighted the following accomplishments:

- The Airborne Laser team in Wichita fully integrated the Lockheed Martin-designed beam control/fire control system inside the ABL aircraft, a modified Boeing 747-400F. Two solid-state illuminator lasers, which are part of the beam control device, and a surrogate high-energy laser were installed and fired repeatedly at a simulated ballistic missile target. The track illuminator laser is designed to track a target, while the beacon illuminator laser is intended to measure atmospheric turbulence that the high-energy chemical laser would encounter in its path to the target. During the ground tests, results from the illuminator firings were fed back to ABL, allowing the surrogate high-energy laser to shoot down a simulated target. The program achieved most of the objectives of the ground tests and expects to satisfy the remaining ones in the coming months.

- In Wichita, the team, including a Boeing-Northrop Grumman contingent on temporary assignment from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., added floor reinforcements and chemical-fuel tanks to the back of the aircraft to prepare the jet for installation of the high-energy laser in 2007.

- The team, with ABL partner Northrop Grumman in the lead, completed a significant milestone for the high-energy laser. In California, Northrop Grumman finished ground-testing the optics that will shape the high-energy laser beam and direct it from the laser to the beam control/fire control system. The optics underwent inspection and refurbishment after the laser achieved lethal power and run-times in a ground laboratory in December 2005.

The team is preparing for another major activity later this year. The program will begin firing the illuminators in flight at an instrumented target board located on a missile-shaped image painted on a test aircraft. This activity will verify ABL's active tracking and atmospheric compensation capabilities.

"This rollout ceremony symbolizes many significant accomplishments," said Pat Shanahan, vice president and general manager of Boeing Missile Defense Systems. "The collective team has done a phenomenal job integrating the aircraft and demonstrating its capability in ground tests. Now we are ready to go fly. We are ready to demonstrate the aircraft's ability to close the fire control loop against a flying target. Once again, we made and demonstrated enormous progress toward ushering in a new age of technology, namely directed energy weapons."

Boeing is the prime contractor for ABL, which will provide a speed-of-light capability to destroy all classes of ballistic missiles in their boost phase of flight. Boeing provides the modified aircraft and the battle management system and is the overall systems integrator. ABL partners are Northrop Grumman, which supplies the high-energy laser and the beacon illuminator laser, and Lockheed Martin, which provides the nose-mounted turret in addition to the beam control/fire control system.

WICHITA, Kansas - -- Remarks by Lt Gen Obering, Missile Defense Agency director:

Welcome to you all …

I am honored to be here today to voice our combined pride at the extraordinary work all of you – military and civilian, government and contractor, workers and supporting family members – have performed to reach this milestone in national security through engineering.

You have overcome some formidable challenges to achieve this breakthrough, and it is appropriate now that we step back to ask a fundamental question – why have you been doing this? If the “why” isn’t compelling, then there’s no need for the rest of the effort. But in this case, the “why” is pretty clear.

9/11 is still very fresh on our minds … non-state actors and terrorists have shown they wish to do us and our country great harm. They only seek improved means to hasten our destruction. The news from North Korea and Iran has been consistently bleak. Their denunciations of the United Sates have been vitriolic, and to the extent they have been able, they have pursued programs to develop, test, and arm ballistic missiles of increasingly long range with lethal payloads.

There is also the issue of proliferation … either between individual states, or between states and their proxies, such as Hezbollah. Sometimes these transactions are done for ideological reasons, as seems to be the case with Iran. Sometimes they are purely for cash, as seems to be the case with North Korea. The end result, however, is the same … weapons of potentially great destruction in the wrong hands … hands that might be hard to see until the last moment.

The “why” is also about the revolutionary technology you are developing that has the potential to change the nature of warfare. You are developing a system that can interdict a threat missile in its boost phase, at a stage when every second counts … a system that the adversary cannot outrun.

Not since that time nearly twenty-two hundred years ago, when Archimedes reflected the sun’s rays to set the Roman fleet on fire off Syracuse, has the world seen a weapon that puts fresh meaning into the phrase “in real time.”

You are also pioneering a field of endeavor on which untold other technologies and advances can build … in hardware and software, in tactics and strategies, in offense and defense … all ultimately contributing to improved national security. The “why” is indeed compelling, and all of you have responded magnificently to the nation’s need. Thank you.

If that is the “why”, then the “what” is laid out here before us. It’s impressive in its size, complexity, and performance.

As an old fighter pilot, I have to marvel at how you can put a six-ton turret on the front of a jet … incorporate an incredibly complex system of optics and avionics … make more modifications to the hull of a 747 than have ever been made before … and still have it airworthy. I’m looking forward to seeing how you’re going to fit the equivalent of 6 SUVs in there. Not only that, you’ve had to invent your own management criteria almost from scratch … new procedures, new tests, new targets, new checks.

The Big Crow aircraft, for example, with its one-of-a-kind plume emulator, is an example of the imagination and dedication at work here. You’ve passed some critical knowledge points … including demonstrating last year that the high-energy laser can produce enough power for enough time to make it operationally lethal.

Today, of course, we’re marking the rollout of the aircraft as it prepares to enter flight testing. You’ve accomplished a tremendous amount since the aircraft arrived here in August of last year. Now it’s time to begin active tracking flight tests against the Big Crow aircraft. You’ve demonstrated capability on the ground.

Let’s do it now in flight.

I don’t have to tell you how difficult your challenges have been, but the way you have overcome them – the “how” – has been equally impressive.

You’ve forged a team of government and contractors that have worked together to push the boundaries of science and engineering in new directions and dimensions. You’ve taken the best and brightest our nation has to offer and accomplished things that our skeptics said could never be done. Yes, there have been a lot of skeptics, but you kept the faith and showed what teamwork, hard work, talent, and dedication can do. And you’ve done this while keeping a tenuous industrial base healthy enough to sustain your efforts over the years.

So you have every reason to be proud.

As you look back, some of you might think this has been a program of survival. But I look on it as a program of discovery. You have discovered new engineering techniques to take advantage of older scientific knowledge … you have discovered new manufacturing techniques to solve enduring structural problems …and you are opening the gate to new operational techniques to solve the age-old challenge of defeating an adversary.

In short, you are laying the groundwork for the twin goals of a more robust missile defense now … and a new field of directed energy systems for the future. Your professionalism and your accomplishments stand clearly before us.

On behalf of your colleagues and teammates in the Missile Defense Agency and the Department of Defense, I thank you.

Airborne Laser Completes Successful In-Flight First Firing of Laser Tracking System

The Missile Defense Agency announced today the successful completion March 15, 2007 of the first in-flight test of the laser targeting system for the Airborne Laser (ABL), a boost-phase missile defense system that is designed to use directed energy to destroy a ballistic missile in the “boost” phase of flight.

This important milestone involved multiple firings of the Tracking Illuminator Laser (TILL), mounted inside of the world’s most heavily modified Boeing 747-400 aircraft, to engage a missile-shaped target painted on the side of a KC-135 aircraft nicknamed “Big Crow,” and used as an aerial target for low-power laser flight testing.

The TILL is a kilowatt-class solid-state laser that is intended to track a boosting ballistic missile and identify the most vulnerable location on the missile in preparation for the eventual firing of the High Energy Laser, which will use directed energy to burn through the rocket motor case of a hostile missile. This is the first open-air lasing in flight by ABL and marks a significant step towards achieving the program’s 2007 knowledge points.

The test was conducted off the coast of California. The ABL Beam Control System was able to engage the target aircraft and calculate the instantaneous range to the target during the engagement.

Data was also collected on atmospheric turbulence and aero-optics using one of “Big Crow's” solid-state laser beacons in preparation to close the atmospheric compensation loop on a future flight. (ends)


Boeing-led Airborne Laser Team Fires Tracking Laser at Airborne Target

ST. LOUIS --- The Boeing Company, along with industry teammates and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, yesterday successfully fired the Airborne Laser (ABL) weapon system's tracking laser in-flight at an airborne target for the first time.

During Thursday's test, the modified Boeing 747-400F took off from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., and used its infrared sensors, part of ABL's Boeing-developed battle management system, to find the simulated missile exhaust generated by an instrumented target board located on the U.S. Air Force's NC-135E Big Crow test aircraft.

The ABL aircraft then pointed and fired its track illuminator laser (TILL) at the target to gather target-tracking data, a key step in a missile engagement. The TILL, a solid-state laser, is part of ABL's beam control/fire control system, developed by Lockheed Martin.

"The Airborne Laser team has successfully transitioned to the next major test phase, completing the first in a series of in-flight laser firings at an airborne target," said Pat Shanahan, vice president and general manager of Boeing Missile Defense Systems. "This first firing confirms that ABL can find an airborne target, precisely fix the track illuminator laser onto that target and use the laser firing results to track the target. This is an important step toward demonstrating the aircraft's ability to engage a flying target."

In upcoming flight tests, ABL will fire its other solid-state laser, the beacon illuminator laser, in conjunction with the TILL to demonstrate the ability to compensate for the atmospheric turbulence that the missile-killing, high-energy chemical laser would encounter in its path to the target. The aircraft then will complete an engagement sequence by firing both illuminator lasers and using a surrogate high-energy laser to simulate a target shootdown.

When these tests are completed, the program will install the actual Northrop Grumman-built high-energy laser in the aircraft to prepare for the first intercept test against an in-flight ballistic missile in 2009.

se spara nella fase di boost significa che dev'essere nei paraggi di dove l'hanno lanciato... o no?

si, nelle vicinanze, infatti per avere diciamo, un contatto, con il confine "nemico" l'aereo effettua un volo a 8

mmm... bisognerebbe approfondire... infatti se uno sta per lanciare degli icbm non penso che si faccia tanti problemi a tirare giu un 747...

E' quallo che penso anch'io. Bello, ma un po' rischioso, sicuramente un aereo equipaggiato in quel modo deve costare parecchio, e non credo che un eventuale nemico che lancia dei missili intercontinentali si lascerebbe fregare da un aereo, in fin dei conti, indifeso, un paio di caccia e lo tirano giù... IMHO è più efficace il MTHEL come sistema di difesa dai missili balistici (che tra l'altro si è dimostrato capace anche di intercettare proiettili d'artiglieria e di mortaio) Voi cosa ne pensate?

non credo che un 747 in quell'ambito stia in volo in solitaria, cmq un volo a forma di 8 per avere una copertura e vicinanza con il possibile confine/sito di lancio

piu' che altro e' che contro i laser ci sono gia' un sacco di contromisure,

la piu' banale e' quella di dare al missile molto "spin" cioe' di farlo girare su se' stesso abbastanza rapidamente in modo che la superficie non si trovi colpita dal laser troppo a lungo

in secondo luogo c'e' la possibilita' di coprire i missili coon materiali riflettenti (analoghi a quelli usati al' interno dell' appaeecchiatura che lo genera per direzionarlo)

opppure di usare dei materiali refrattari analoghi a quelli usati dallo space shuttle per proteggere lo scafo di alluminio dal calore del rientro nell' atmosfera.




Infine si puo' sempre ridurre leggermente la velocita' dei missili in modo che la carlinga sia piu' fredda in partenza (l'attrito con l'aria gia' di suo scalda abbastanza un missile)
