Dunque, ho capito (grazie anche a iuccio (http://www.hwupgrade.it/forum/member.php?u=86879)) che la MB ''per stabilità'' setta nel BIOS 333MHz, anziché 400 come quando avevo 2x512MB.
Lo dice la FAQ di ASUS:
To be more compatible and stable with some memory modules, the default clock will be at 333MHz if four DDR400 memory modules are plugged on the A8N-SLI. But you still can set at 400MHz manually in the Bios to gain better performance. Moreover, in order to get best performance and compatibility, please choose those memory modules which are verified by us. You can get the QVL from the link below.
La parte in grassetto mi piace, ma a 400 il sistema è instabile e crasha, e comunque non regge al prime95.

I miei moduli si chiamano VS1GBKIT400 (CL2.5) e i timings son quelli di default (2.5-3-3-7), nessun overclock di nessun tipo.

C'è qualcosa che per ignoranza non ho provato a fare?

Non è ragionevole aspettarsi che quel ''Component: VS32M8-5'' corrisponda anche ai 4 moduli che ho io? Si può verificare? E se così fosse, significa qualcosa? (oltre al fatto che essere nella QVL non garantisce un bel niente? :))
