If you only need basic translation of single words, you can check a website.
The one I usually use (sorry for the pun) is Oxford Paravia (http://www.oxfordparavia.it/) (pronounced: OX-ford puh-ruh-VEE-uh).

There should be also a free dictionary engine for Windows, with word correspondance tables for many pairs of languages (mostly Italian+something); but it seems to be unavailable at the moment.

I always use Ragazzini 2003 (Zanichelli)'s cd and I'm quite satisfied.
And also I use monolingual dictionaries on line.
