The "pioneer" mainboard makers say that in spite of all the measures Intel has taken to popularize its Pentium 4 CPUs, the sales of Pentium 4 based mainboards are rather dull. According to Digitimes, for instance, in July the share of these mainboards in the general shipments volume of the "big four" (ASUSTeK, Elitegroup, MSI and Gigabyte) was nothing more than 10%, whereas in August (when i845 started shipping) it hardly reached 15%. Being aware of Intel's feelings to Pentium 4, we won't call a high result.
The manufacturers wait for a more tangible sales upturn in September, when the i845 chipset will be launched officially (on September 10). However, with its $42 price, this chipset will hardly win more than 15% of the sales (or 20% if united with i850). Perhaps, the sales dynamics will be lively at first (thanks to the so-called Intel worshipers), but later i845 should be priced down to the level of mass chipsets. Otherwise its share in the mainboard makers' shipments will shrink back to the modest 15%.
