USB device, the Operating System detects the new hardware and installs the correct driver from its database if available.

If you feel that Windows installs the wrong driver, then the question is: Do you have a better driver for your device? If yes, you can direct the Operating System to the driver’s location and it will install it for you.

If you do not have a better driver for your device, then removing the Windows XP drivers from its database is simply irrelevant in resolving your problem.

guide on how to manually install an USB driver.

Please, pay attention to the Fig.9, in particular. It is very important to direct the Operating System to the correct location of the driver.

If you have the correct driver on a floppy disk or a DVD\CD-ROM disk, you should put a “check mark” in the “Search removable media (floppy. CD-ROM…)” line box, otherwise select the correct location accordingly to your situation.

You should also search for previously installed incorrect drivers and remove them.

thanks for your answer but... I KNOW how to INSTALL A driver, my question is HOW to uninstall definitively a driver.
Do you know when you connect for the first time a usb product on your pc :) ?
It appears a popup that advert you that a new hardware has been connected.
Even if i uninstall my usb ps2 pad converter that popup does not appear anymore!!

:)
thx a lot :)

window is part of the Operating System "Plug and Play" feature and has nothing to do if that device has a driver installed or not.

Anyway, you can remove the device drivers if you navigate Control Panel\ System\Hardware\Device Manager. To remove the driver permanently, double-click the entry for the device in question, and on the Driver tab, click the Uninstall button. Windows will remove the files and Registry Hives entries completely.

However, I have the feeling that perhaps your question is referring to the Windows XP drivers database location. Windows XP stores all of its drivers in the Driver.cab file, it is a compressed file located in the %SystemRoot%\Driver Cache\i386 directory on your system.

This is an enormous library of drivers that only Bill Gates perhaps could deal with it. I would stay away from messing with it.
