problema riconoscimento disco

come da titolo... il mio PC è composto da 2 hdd, il primo 40gb è dove ho installato linux (debian 3.1r0) + winXP ed il secondo da 160 gb diviso in 3 partizioni 2 EXT2 ed una NTFS.
Il problema è che al momento del caricamento del s.o. mi dà questo errore:
dev/hdb (il disco da 160 Gb)

Non è un problema hardware perchè winXP vede la partizione NTFS del disco.
Ho provato a leggere il file fstab ma di dev/hdb nemmeno l' ombra...

...e questo potrebbe essere legato al problema precedente. Le partizioni finiscono al cilindro 19929, ma il disco è riportato di 16709 (e infatti la capacità indicata è inferiore).

Potrebbe essere una limitazione dell'hardware; nel frattempo non accedere a hdb7.

credo comunque sia un problema di debian perchè sotto xp venivano riconosciuti tutti i 160 Giga.

ho provato a ripartizionare il disco ed a riformattarlo con l' utility dell' installazione di debian e a parte la capacità che ancora non viene riconosciuta completamente (130 anzichè 160 Giga), le 2 partizioni linux vengono riconosciute e montate.
Provando però ad avviare partition magic da dischetto e selezionando il disco, mi dà errore (ancora qualcosa a proposito dell' lba).

So che alcune revision di quel chipset non possono usare dma su lba48, ma linux gestisce la cosa (usando il PIO oltre i 130GB). Il problema quindi è un altro. Puoi mandarmi il dmesg completo?

le 2 partizioni linux vengono riconosciute e montate.
Se il partizionamento è quello che hai postato, _non accedere_ alla seconda partizione di linux finché non risolviamo il problema! Ti sembra che funziona, ma vedrai che botto non appena superi i 130GB.

ho anche dato un occhiata in giro e ho trovato uno nella mia stessa situazione che ha risolto disabilitando il DMA mode 5 al boot ed abilitando invece il PIO mode 4.

cosa ne pensate?

eventualmente come posso configurare manualmente il sistema per abilitare il pio4 all' avvio?
come bootloader (dual boot) ho grub ma non so come configurarlo (il tipo aveva lilo anzichè grub)

Tienilo su lba (verifica comunque se è disponibile un aggiornamento del bios; non è specificato "quale" lba supporta)


Comincia a venirmi il sospetto che sia l'HD a non accettare i comandi lba48. Alcuni dischi ad esempio hanno un jumper per ridurre artificiosamente la capienza, per compatibilità con vecchi chipset. Per verificarlo dovresti testare l'HD su un altro computer (anche di qualche tuo amico, anche tramite un live CD tipo knoppix).

Il fatto che windows ti "veda" tutti i 160 GB di per se vuol dire poco: anche linux li "vede" (per questo stampa quel messaggio, altrimenti non stamperebbe nulla se l'lba48 non fosse necessario), ma la partizione ntfs giace ben dentro i 130GB.

Le tabelle delle partizioni giaccino all'inizio del disco; le informazioni ntfs giacciono all'inizio e a metà partizione. Non sei necessariamente sei arrivato a scrivere alla fine del disco.

Se puoi ripetere questa prova, e far leggere a windows la parte finale del disco (basta effettuare un controllo della superficie sulla partizione che "sfora", oppure creare una partizione ntfs da 150 gb e una da 10 gb e vedere se ci riesce), chiariamo definitivamente questo dubbio.

dunque ho provato a creare 2 partizioni primarie da circa 150 (inizio disco) e circa 6 Gb (fine disco) e a formattarle sotto win in ntfs: no problem. poi ho copiato cartelle e files sul disco da 6 Gb fino a riempirlo: ancora no problem.
questo dovrebbe chiarire la situazione: direi che è linux a creare problemi

ho poi trovato una voce nel bios che abilita/disabilita PIO e DMA: ho messo PIO4 per master e slave e disabilitato DMA: riavviato il pc ma da ancora lo stesso errore = cannot use LBA48! e linux accede al disco ancora in modalita dma5.

infine ho controllato i jumper dei dischi e sono settati master/slave (no cable setting)
ed ho visto che c'è il famoso jumper per ridurre la capacità, solo che ovviamente vorrei tenerlo come soluzione di ultimo ripiego (- 30Gb sigh!)

Linux dovrebbe usare dma fino a 130GB e poi PIO, automaticamente. Se non lo fa è un bug (in effetti il tuo kernel non è proprio recentissimo)

hdparm arriva troppo tardi; la modalità PIO va forzata prima del probe del disco, attivarla dopo non serve a nulla (in quanto la limitazione della capacità accessibile del disco è già stata decisa, e non può essere modificata).
Forzarla era facile prima che decidessero di mettere il supporto ide come moduli anziché builtin.

Il mio consiglio a questo punto è provare con un liveCD recente, quindi con un kernel meno vecchio, e vedere cosa dice.

Dovrebbe scrivere questo:

che sarebbe corretto: usa il PIO > 130GB e il DMA per lo spazio inferiore.

Non è così facile. Dal 2.6.8 al 2.6.15 sono cambiate un mucchio di cose; in particolare è stato rimosso il devfs e occorre una versione di udev aggiornata. Se la tua distribuzione usa uno di questi due strumenti per gestire /dev, sono problemi. Se hai un /dev statico se ne può parlare.
In ogni caso ti consiglio di chiedere aiuto ai debianoidi a questo punto.

Prima crei le directory dove vuoi montare le partizioni (ad es. /mnt/dati), quindi scrivi la regola in fstab sulla falsariga di quelle che vedi esistenti.

Qualcosa tipo:

Sì.
Dopo aver modificato fstab, riavvia il computer (oppure monta la partizione manualmente con mount /mnt/dati ).
In qualsiasi momento puoi vedere se la partizione è montata, eseguendo "mount" senza parametri.

E' indifferente. Se vuoi creare più di 4 partizioni, fino a 3 possono essere primarie; una primaria devi utilizzarla come estesa, per crearci dentro le altre partizioni logiche.

ext2/3 sono molto compatibili, tant'è che puoi convertire l'uno nell'altro con semplicità. L'ext3 ha in più il journal.
Puoi montare un ext3 comne ext2; non sfrutti il journal, ma funziona.

Se quel messaggio è relativo alla partizione di /boot (se ne hai creata una), ti consiglio di lasciar perdere. Se si riferisce alla partizione di root, allega il dmesg completo e il tuo file /etc/fstab.

a quanto pare la partizione di root non dà problemi:"EXT3 FS on hda3, internal journal"
mentre le altre sembrano essere partizioni ext3 montate con ext2

non capisco proprio da dove possa essere uscita sta cosa... :muro:
aggiungi anche il fatto che non dice più che dopo un certo settore accede al disco non in modalità DMA ma in PIO (cosa che credo stia facendo)... :muro:

perchè hda3 viene visto come ext3 anche se in fstab è configurato come ext2 senza darmi però l' errore che mi dava con le altre 3 partizioni?

Perché quando il sistema accede a / per leggere fstab, in qualche modo / deve essere stato già...montato. Evidentemente è stato montato correttamente come ext3.
