CPU - SVideo - ram ?
Many, but not all, computers will run MAME. Its performance depends mostly on a system's CPU speed and, to a smaller extent, the amount of memory. Also, the performance of individual games varies, as some games have higher hardware requirements than others.
Here is a basic PC system that will play (and hold) about half of the MAME-supported games:
* Intel Celeron / AMD Duron 1000 MHz
* 128 - 256 MB RAM
* a varying amount of hard drive space (a complete MAME ROM set would take over forty gigabytes, but most individual ROM sets are quite small)
* DirectX (Windows version) or VESA 2.0+ (DOS version) compatible graphics card
* Any sound card that works in Windows (Windows version) or Sound Blaster compatible sound card (DOS version)
GRAPHICS: These games don't use modern 3D effects, so a 3D graphics card isn't necessary, though one allows you to use special screen effects in the Windows version. For DOS, your best choice is a good 2D card with VESA 2.0 support and 4 MB or more of video memory (good choices here are Matrox G200 or G400, or the ATI Radeon for quality TV-output).
SOUND: All sound cards supported by Windows will naturally work with the Windows version of MAME. For DOS MAME, the absolutely best choice is Sound Blaster 16 or Sound Blaster 32 AWE, which you can find from any bargain bin cheaply. SB64PCI, SB128PCI, Ensoniq Soundscape PCI, and the Sound Blaster Live! derivatives reportedly work also, but there may be problems with the legacy DOS drivers. Check the Easy MameCab site for information about the PCI cards' support in DOS.
In general, better components will yield better results. It also depends on the game(s) you want to emulate. For example, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Scramble do not require much power, so a Pentium-166 would run them fine. A gigahertz processor with a good 2D card is able play at least a half of the games. Games that use 32-bit CPUs, or many CPUs, or have complex graphics and / or sound hardware like Xexex, Street Fighter the Movie, Bloodstorm, Revolution X, and the like need 1.5 GHz or more. There are some games for which even a 4 GHz Pentium 4 is not enough, like Cruis'n USA and Cruis'n World. Games like Metal Slug 3 or King of Fighters '99 require 256 MB of RAM, and Hyper Neogeo requires 768 MB. Small games can work with under 128 MB easily.
For Macs, any G3-based machine should run most of the classic games well in MacMAME, though again even a G5 is not enough for some.
And no, you can NOT play MAME on your Web TV.
Remember: The MAME project isn't intended to make every game playable, but to make every game play faithfully. Accept the fact that some games will not run adequately on your system, and you will spare yourself some disappointment. (Also, remember that MAME is free. If you paid for it, you were robbed.)
