GeexBox: 1.2

GeeXboX 2.0-alpha1 release (14 febbraio 2010)

Quote:
This has been announced for years but we're finally stepping forward to the so long awaited for 2.0 release of GeeXboX. Today, we're proud to let you have a first try at this new version, based on the Enna Media Center application that we have developed.

Enna is a standalone application that one can use on any Linux distribution (soon to be available for MacOSX and Windows users, who knows ...) that replaces the old and dying MPlayer OSD interface we've been using for so long. The GeeXboX distribution you all know about will then become the Enna Live-CD project, but with all optimizations, configuration and tweakings that one may be able to do on his regular computer.

With Enna, GeeXboX now looks promising again, with this new shiny look and feel interface. Also being much more nicer, Enna allows us to add so many new features that you all were waiting for (check out the Enna website for that) so future looks bright again.

Also, Enna has been designed to be simple and intuitive to be used. It can be controlled either through keyboard, mouse or remote control. Mouse support is quite new in GeeXboX but its usage is kinda trivial. As for keyboard, we have tried to make usable with as few keys as possible. As a result, one can control Enna the following way:

* Arrows: used to navigate between the different menu lists.
* Enter: used to validate your selection.
* Backspace: used to cancel or browse back to previous menu.
* Escape: if you ever wanna stop Enna (and shutdown GeeXboX as well).

Ok, beta2 was not the last one and here comes beta3 which is definitely candidate for 1.2 release. We've performed a huge amount of bug fixes in various area and were able to correct some long standing issues we had. Two major changes come with this release: a completely new automounter that now relies on D-BUS and HAL and the restoration of installer feature. So yeah, finally (it's been time ...), you should be able to install GeeXboX again, on both your HDDs and USB keys. Other parts of GeeXboX also welcomed a few changes, mostly regarding the player, that received a few fixes for AudioCDs, DVDs, AAC and RealVideo 9 playback.

Detailed Changelog (relative to 1.2-beta2 release):

System:
- Upgrade Linux kernel to 2.6.27.10

GeeXboX 1.2-beta1 (11/01/2008)

As usual, it took way longer than expected but there it is: GeeXboX 1.2-beta1. Why Beta release ? Honnestly, this version should now be pretty stable. However, too few tests have been done by users on forum recently and we wanted to confirm the good feedback we have before releasing the final 1.2.

So what has changed to take so much time ? As told at 1.1 release's time, the major change is X.org inclusion. This was a lot of work but this allows GeeXboX to fully support wide screens and all of the new HDTVs monitors. Everything is autodetected and configured and it should detect the best resolution that suits your monitor. Along with X.org, come all of its video drivers. Say bye bye to VIDIX (as good as it was) and welcome XVideo. This brings video acceleration (but still no GPU offload) to nearly all video cards in the wild (whether it is Intel, nVidia, ATI, S3, SiS, VIA ...).

Alos come many kernel and internal changes. The whole distributions is now modularized to best detect your hardware and load ony what is needed. Many drivers have been added and installation has been completely reworked for better usability.

This version also has been optimized for various platforms like EeePCs, EasyGate and bring official support of MacIntels computers. It also introduce a new port to x86_64 architecture which brings a small performance boost regarding to the 32bit edition.

Unless major bugs are encountered, you may expect the final 1.2 release to come pretty soon. In the mean time, the more you test this beta version and report bugs, the fastest it'll be issued.

BUG Noti

GeeXboX 1.1 : 'Not a substitue for Human interaction' edition (07/01/2007)

Although development never stopped, more than a year has passed without any new official GeeXboX release. This new one is a really good candidate for your HTPC multimedia distribution choice. It comes with an improved hardware support, providing dozens of new drivers (a lot of new WiFi controllers, DVB card chipsets and new remote controls). It also comes with a massively upgraded and more stable MPlayer, which features native decoding of various audio/video formats/codecs that used to be available through non-free Win32 DLLs only (such as Windows Media Video, Flash ...). Also, GeeXboX now has some decoding speed improvements (use of SSSE3 instructions from Core2Duos has been added) and the OSD menu has been completely rewritten to provide a lot of new attractives features. Oh, and did we mention ? It can plays decrypted EVO files from HD-DVD ?

While still working on version 2.0, the next version of GeeXboX (1.2) will come with some features that were requested for quite a long time. First, it'll come in both 32 and 64 bits editions (second one is 15% faster). But more importantly, it'll be first version of GeeXboX to come with a native HDTV screens support. So, just stay tuned, most of these features are already available, and 1.2 won't take a year to come this time ;-) By the way, speaking about the future, we're looking for a Sony PlayStation 3 to port GeeXboX to: that would make the best HTPC ever. New HDTV ISO is available

New HDTV ISO is available.

ChangeLog:
- support for AMD GeodeLX
- new driver for Intel video cards.
- way better fetch of monitor's native resolution and parameters.
- you can now pass xorg=XxY (without frequency argument) at boot prompt
- you can now pass xorg=480p/720p/1080p at boot prompt
- aspect ratio correction (16:9 now really looks 16:9)
- support for installator

Good news is that now it works for me Wink
I mean that GeeXboX can autodetect and set my LCD TV screen to its native resolution (1360x768) without any special option.
Picture really is full screen, with no more black border or image stretching.

Works on my ATI card.
I've tested with Via Unichrome too and it only works with my 4:3 TFT (doesn't seem to like much the wide resolutions, I've got green stripes).

Besides, it works in both VGA (native 1360x768) and DVI/HDMI (native 720p, i.e. 1280x720) connections.

Generator can be fetched at:
http://geexbox.org/~ben/xorg/geexbox...19.i386.tar.gz

Good tests !

Preview GeeXboX HDTV (X.Org inside)

Hey hey hey, a new GeeXboX release to be tested.
It is way far from being complete and in a release state (don't ask when it'll be out) and it's still based on V1.x design (no freevo inside), but ...

Here comes the first HDTV Ready version of GeeXboX.
Basically I've managed to add X.Org server to the distribution.

One way to test, grab the i386 generator:
http://geexbox.org/~ben/xorg/geexbox...19.i386.tar.gz

The ISO is a bit bigger but nothing harmful.
So, what's new ...

- HD resolutions (both square and wide) are now taken into account.
- All video cards (ATI, nVidia, SiS, Unichrome ...) now have fully optimized drivers (i.e. supports overlay, the equivalent to vidix).
- Unless you choose to run in VESA mode (but then only standard resolutions should be available), there's no more TVOut support. Considering that TVOut only supports up to 800x600, there's no need for HDTV and so no need for X.Org (just keep the old version).
- There's not (yet) XVMC support (a.k.a. MPEG2/4 hardware decompression).

Using the generator, you may have to edit the /etc/X11/X.cfg file.
There you can set the requested resolution, frequency and driver you want to use.
The list of resolutions is listed in /etc/X11/resolutions file (same for drivers in /etc/X11/drivers file). You should keep driver selection to "auto", it should work pretty well. You can also set a resolution that is not in this list, it may work (or tell me more resolutions to be added to this file).

GeeXboX will try do determine the best suited video driver and set the screen at the requested resolution, than as a fallback, to the highest resolution from the /etc/X11/resolutions file. Once booted (it may take a bit more time than before), you'll have a new menu in info menu, telling you which resolution your screen has been configured to.

To avoid burning ISO 50 times to set a good resolution, you can also pass arguments from boot prompt:
Ex:
- "geexbox" starts in console mode (old school)
- "hdtv xorg=AxB@F", ex: hdtv xorg=1368x768@60
- "hdtv xorg=AxB", ex: hdtv xorg=1280x720
- "hdtv xorg=480p/720p/1080p" (choose one only)

Please report bugs (and there will be a lot of), congratulations, insults, money, hot chicks, caiman bank account opening or whatever you like ...

Have a nice try
